Oxford University Press and Hum sign agreement to pilot Alchemist Review

Hum has announced that Oxford University Press (OUP), one of the world’s largest university presses, will soon begin using Hum’s AI-based editorial assistant, Alchemist Review

Working on a limited set of content, this collaboration will enable OUP to leverage Hum’s deep textual analysis together with Grounded AI’s contextual citation checks to provide an intelligent manuscript assessment to their editors. The goals are to enhance the depth of manuscript assessment, reduce editorial burden and seek efficiencies in the editorial review process.

As part of a human-led editorial review process, Alchemist Review will use advanced AI capabilities to automatically extract key manuscript insights, including central claims, methodology assessment, reference validation, and research originality. These artifacts will be used to support OUP’s editors in making more informed decisions while reducing administrative burden.

An additional part of this collaboration will focus on tool integration into existing editorial workflows. OUP and Hum will be working with Silverchair’s ScholarOne Manuscripts to develop a process for seamless manuscript extraction and the return of key information back into their system.

“OUP is exactly the type of organization we seek to collaborate with. They’re smart, diligent, and deeply engaged in the details,” said Dustin Smith, Co-founder and President of Hum. “We both deeply value enhancing the speed, quality, and efficiency of editorial decision making. We expect their feedback to be instrumental in shaping Alchemist Review.

The trial will focus on implementing Alchemist Review’s advanced AI capabilities to automatically extract key manuscript insights, including central claims, methodology assessment, citation validation, and research originality evaluation. These features will support OUP’s editors and reviewers in making more informed decisions leading to enhanced productivity.

“At OUP, we’re exploring innovative technologies to address challenges and opportunities in the publishing process while maintaining our commitment to the highest standards of academic integrity,” said Julia McDonnell, Director of Journals Product at Oxford University Press. “Alchemist Review offers promising capabilities that could significantly improve the support for our editorial teams in evaluating manuscripts and delivering exceptional content to the academic community.”
