Brill and Semantico launch BrillOnline Discovery

Brill and Semantico are proud to announce the launch of BrillOnline Discovery, which offers users the option to search across all of Brill’s online resources from one central place. BrillOnline Discovery uses the Scolaris Linking Hub technology developed by Semantico. This enables federated search increased discoverability across the family of Brill platforms (BrillOnline Primary Sources, BrillOnline Books and Journals, BrillOnline Reference Works and BrillOnline Bibliographies).

A multi-platform publisher like Brill faces challenges in communicating the wealth of online information to users. With over 150 reference works and primary source collections, 200 journals and 4000 e-books the challenge is big. The number of visitors to Brill’s online resources increases every month, which is an extra incentive for Brill to continue to invest in and improve user experience.

The Scolaris Linking Hub developed by Semantico helped Brill solve the problem of communicating the wealth of online information by enabling the user to discover and navigate to content on every site within the publisher’s ecosystem, in a simple and cost-effective way. Users are now offered a full view of all content, links to related documents and access to multiple content types. With the introduction of BrillOnline Discovery, widgets have been added on the different platform which gives the user a full view of all content while visiting any one of the BrillOnline platforms, making it easier for users to search and discover the rich, high quality content Brill offers.

The Scolaris technology – developed by Semantico – promotes discoverability by providing intelligent, full-text search powered by Solr and allows rich taxonomy support for faceted search and browsing. The Scolaris Linking Hub solution also creates enhanced flexibility for customers by enabling different levels of subscription and direct access. This allows a broader range of customers to discover and engage with Brill content.

“Brill delivers high quality content from a wealth of sources. We want all of our customers to access and engage with this content,” says Sam Bruinsma, Vice President Business Development. “Now with the launch of BrillOnline Discovery, users can easily search across our extensive corpus and be presented with a seamless and elegant user experience.”

“The Linking Hub resolves the age old issue of bringing together content from a variety of sources and exposing this in an intuitive and comprehensive way,” commented Giles Gailer, Account Manager. “The Linking Hub will benefit both publishers and end users, and we’re confident that this product will have a positive and far-reaching impact.”

ISNI Assignments Top 7 Million

Exponential growth in assignments has led to more than 7 million names receiving the ISO-certified International Standard Name Identifier known as “ISNI”. Published in early 2012, the standard applies a unique 16-digit code to public identities, providing a single identifier that can be leveraged across many applications, syncing alternate or disparate spellings of the same name, and eliminating confusion when names are alike. Bowker, an affiliated business of ProQuest and a registration agency for the standard, tracks assignments and usage of ISNIs.

“The rapid uptake reflects the standard’s ability to simplify the process of identification,” said Beat Barblan, Bowker’s Director of Identifier Services and Treasurer of the ISNI International Agency. “It’s an authoritative way to ensure accuracy when organizations share information. With an ISNI, we know we are referring to the correct Sue Johnson, Dan Brown, Rich Cohen, Stephen Dubner, or Stephen King.”

The ISNI International Agency — a worldwide group of organizations that serve researchers, rights management organizations, authors, musicians, and other public contributors — created the standard to disambiguate names. Once an ISNI is assigned by a registration agency, it is shared across the global digital information industry, enabling organizations to apply it to content held in their databases by or about that party. The ISNI then acts as a link for data. So, for example, information about Brian Cox, the physicist and musician, can be linked across research he has done at CERN and music database entries for his former band D:Ream.

Users tapping into any of the organizations that use ISNIs will need only a name and just enough background data (such as a birth date or book title) to zero in on the correct identity. ISNIs are especially critical for rights management, accurate royalty payments, and cross-domain linking.

Currently, there are more than 700,000 researchers whose names have been assigned ISNIs and 480,000 institutions with ISNI assignments. “These numbers are expected to grow significantly, as organizations such as Macmillan’s Digital Science, LaTrobe University, and the National Library of New Zealand have joined the ISNI International Agency as members,” said Laura Dawson, Product Manager for Identifier Services at Bowker.

Organizations and individuals can apply for an ISNI for any public identity – real or fictional – through a registration agency, such as Bowker. To apply for ISNIs through Bowker or obtain more information, contact Laura Dawson, Product Manager for Identifier Services, at laura.dawson@bowker.com. Use ISNI’s free lookup interface at http://www.isni.org/search.

Springer and the American Thoracic Society to collaborate

Springer and the American Thoracic Society (ATS) have entered into a partnership to collaborate on the book series Respiratory Medicine. Springer will hold editorial responsibility, but will work with the ATS to develop new topics for books. Members of the society will have free access to the eBooks in the series on SpringerLink and be eligible for discounted prices of the print versions on Springer’s website. The series includes 20 books with about 15 in development. The first volume was published in 2009.

The books in the series Respiratory Medicine offer clinical and research-oriented resources for pulmonologists and other practitioners and researchers working in respiratory care. Spanning a broad range of issues in respiratory medicine, the series covers topics such as COPD, asthma and allergy, pulmonary problems in pregnancy, molecular basis of lung disease and sleep disordered breathing. The series editor is Sharon Rounds, MD, Professor of Medicine and of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the Alpert Medical School at Brown University in the US.

Dr. Rounds said, “It is terrific to be partnering with the American Thoracic Society, the premier international professional organization in the field. The ATS membership includes top scientists and clinicians and we are looking forward to collaborating with them.”

Richard Lansing, Editorial Director Clinical Medicine at Springer, said, “We are honored to be working with the American Thoracic Society on book projects that will become part of our existing, successful Respiratory Medicine series. The series is a perfect fit to meet the needs of the ATS mission.”

“The ATS is very pleased to partner with Springer on this important book series,” said ATS Journals Publisher Diane Gern. “Providing richer, more expansive educational resources for our members is an integral part of the society’s mission.”

The roots of the American Thoracic Society (www.thoracic.org) reach back to 1905, when a small group of physicians decided that the best way to improve care for tuberculosis patients was to share their experiences and discoveries. Today, the ATS has grown into an international society with more than 15,000 members. The ATS is the world’s leading medical association dedicated to improving health worldwide by advancing research, clinical care and public health in respiratory disease, critical illness and sleep disorders.

EBSCO Information Services and Cosmotron Partner to Enhance Library Discovery in Czech and Slovak Republic

A new partnership between EBSCO Information Services and Cosmotron, an ILS vendor serving the Czech and Slovak Republic, provides expanded services to mutual customers. A joint development will enable libraries to deliver valuable content from EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) to customers using the systems that are familiar to them.

Providing access to EDS’s unified index will expand the quality and amount of content available for Cosmotron users. The partnership provides users with a solution that allows Cosmotron users to have access to the EDS search engine, leveraging the strong metadata and relevancy ranking system as well as other features and functionality of EDS.

Cosmotron’s Director Nadežda Andrejčíková says the partnership will benefit all customers and provide a seamless user experience. “At Cosmotron we continually strive to work on innovating and improving our technologies and services. The integration of EBSCO Discovery Service will allow our users to also access sources directly through the ARL interface.”

EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box—searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.

EBSCO Discovery Service is quickly becoming the discovery selection for many libraries (www.ebscohost.com/discovery/eds-news), and an obvious partner for content providers. Because the service builds on the foundation provided by the EBSCOhost® platform, libraries gain a full user experience for discovering their collections/OPAC—which is not typical in the discovery space. Further still, in the many universities and other libraries where EBSCOhost is the most-used platform for premium research, users are not asked to change their pathways or habits for searching. There’s simply more to discover on the familiar EBSCOhost platform, and the same can be said for library administrators who can leverage their previous work with EBSCOadmin.

50% grant now available for Knowledge Unlatched pilot fee

Jisc is pleased to announce that from today, 11 December, the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) has agreed to make a grant of up to £550 to universities in England that participate in the Knowledge Unlatched pilot.

This grant contribution will be used to reduce the participation fee paid by English libraries by 50%.

Knowledge Unlatched is an organisation dedicated to promoting open access for scholarly books. Their model uses the collective purchasing power of the world’s libraries to make academic books freely available to all and they are inviting libraries from around the world to participate in a pilot to trial this new model. Libraries can participate by pledging (a maximum of) £1100 to ‘unlatch’ a collection of 28 humanities and social sciences books. If at least 200 libraries from around the world sign up for the collection by 31 January 2014, these books will be made free for anyone in the world to read on an open access basis.

Libraries that participate in the pilot will receive a Knowledge Unlatched membership fee waiver until January 2016, usage data on the collection and the right to participate in Knowledge Unlatched governance. As a result of HEFCE’s grant, English libraries will be able to secure the benefits of participating in the Knowledge Unlatched Pilot by pledging a maximum of £550.

HEFCE senior policy advisor, Ben Johnson said:

“I’m delighted to be able to confirm HEFCE’s support for the Knowledge Unlatched scheme. I believe this is an important pilot in testing out a potential new model for open access book publishing. The lessons that we learn from this pilot will be of prime importance in gauging both the viability of models like this in the longer term and the readiness of the scholarly book publishing world to support open access more widely.”

Jisc is managing the pledging process for UK universities and colleges and will administer grant funding for the English libraries. Full details of how to pledge can be viewed on the Jisc Collections website. Pledging will remain open until 31 January 2014.

Lorraine Estelle, Jisc’s executive director of content and discovery and divisional CEO Jisc Collections, welcomed the announcement:

“Scholarly monograph publishing is important to researchers, especially in the humanities and social sciences where the book is the main method by which they communicate their research. It is important that we explore new publishing models to support the monograph and we hope that the HEFCE grant will encourage libraries to participate in the pilot and help drive forward the future of scholarly monograph publishing.”

Frances Pinter, executive director of Knowledge Unlatched added:

“The HEFCE grant is a major contribution to helping explore new ways of reaching open access for books through cooperation between libraries and publishers that will decrease costs to institutions while at the same time bring all the benefits of open access to the world.”

Knowledge Unlatched is planning to establish a joint forum that brings together libraries and publishers in early 2014.

The London Book Fair Announces Move To Olympia In 2015 And Launches London Book And Screen Week 2014

Following the substantial coverage in the media regarding The Earls Court Opportunity Area, the future of Earls Court as an exhibition venue from 2015 onwards remains uncertain and it is unlikely to be available. Reed Exhibitions announces today that The London Book Fair 2014 will be the last to take place in its current location, Earls Court.

From 2015, The London Book Fair will move from Earls Court to an equally iconic new home at sister ECO venue, Olympia.

This decision was taken following extensive consultation with The London Book Fair Advisory bodies, representing the industry at home and overseas.

Commenting on the developments, Jacks Thomas, Director, The London Book Fair, says, ‘We have listened long and hard to those who participate in The London Book Fair and, while it is sad that Earls Court is unlikely to form part of the London exhibition venue mix, we fully appreciate the great affection the industry has for West London and believe that moving to Olympia is currently the right move for the publishing industry.

I would like to thank everyone – including our Advisory bodies – who has taken a keen and passionate interest in this important next step for The London Book Fair. I thank, in particular, David Roche whose support in chairing our committees has been stalwart.’

David Roche, Non-Executive Chair, The London Book Fair Advisory Board adds, ‘The London Book Fair has taken a great deal of time and trouble to present the two prospective venue options currently available in London. They have listened to their stakeholders and taken the decision favoured by a majority voice that West London must be the home for the foreseeable future. I’d like to thank all those on the LBF Advisory Board and the IRC Steering Group for their time that they have given and their input into the process.’
