The Wellcome Trust and Palgrave Macmillan publish first open access monograph

Palgrave Macmillan will announce today that they have published their first open access monograph, the first comprehensive history of fungal infections, funded by The Wellcome Trust.

Fungal Disease in Britain and the United States 1850-2000, by Dr Aya Homei and Professor Michael Worboys, will be available as a free ebook to download from Palgrave Connect and online retailers such as Amazon Kindle, from today.

Simon Chaplin, Head of the Wellcome Library, comments: “We are delighted that this new book will be made freely available to as wide an audience as possible. The Wellcome Trust is committed to promoting research in the history of medicine and medical humanities, and working with authors and publishers to make this research accessible. The release of Aya Homei’s and Professor Worboys’s book demonstrates how well this can work, and others will follow their lead.”

Professor Michael Worboys, Director of the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine at the University of Manchester said:  “Having had experience of publishing journal articles open access in the past, we were delighted to be able to publish an entire book open access with the support of The Wellcome Trust and Palgrave Macmillan.

“Fungal infections are the great neglected diseases of medical history. While most are mild and common, if troublesome, others are rare, life-threatening and a growing problem. We hope that through making our book open access, and available for free to a wider audience, we will bring attention to this class of infectious diseases.”

Sam Burridge, Managing Director, Palgrave Macmillan said: “The humanities and social sciences do not always have access to funding which enables academics to publish via open access models, but we’re proud that we have been able to publish this book open access with the help of the Wellcome Trust – offering the reader valuable insights into subjects such as the history of science, for free. We hope it will be the first of many open access monographs.”

The book is published through a CC BY license, the most permissive open access license, meaning that readers can alter, transform, or build upon the article and then distribute the resulting work as long as the original work is correctly cited. It will be available in print copy on demand.

SAGE Statement on OASPA’s Action

Following on from a statement issued by OASPA http://oaspa.org/blog/. Sage has released the following statement.

We welcome OASPA’s investigation into the quality of research published by its  members and will fully cooperate with the 6-month review. We have already taken steps  to ensure that the peer review process of the Journal of International Medical Research is  much more robust and are confident that OASPA will find our processes more than  sufficiently strengthened when they undertake the review. Any paper with similar flaws  would not get through either stage of the peer review process of JIMR today.

JIMR did not accept the article for publication as it stands. It was accepted subject to  further editorial queries being answered to the satisfaction of the journal.

JIMR operates a two-stage review process, specific to this journal. First, the editor  performs an initial review of a submission and then, once a paper has passed this initial  review stage, it is accepted subject to a detailed technical edit, which is undertaken by at  least two experienced medical technical editors. It is not uncommon for articles to be  rejected at this technical stage.

While we are confident that the technical edit would have revealed the errors, we are  extremely concerned that a paper with fundamental errors got through the initial stage  and, as discussed with and acknowledged by OASPA, have taken steps to ensure that it  cannot occur again.

JIMR is a long-established, respected journal that has been publishing quality research  for 41 years. It is JCR-listed, and its rejection rate was 62.5% in 2012. JIMR operates  with complete editorial independence and the Editor has no financial incentive to accept papers. Professor Malcolm Lader Ph.D., M.D., F.R.C. Psych., F. Med. Sci., Emeritus  Professor, King’s College London is the Editor of the journal and has been for the last 25  years. The journal has a world class Editorial Board.

SAGE is committed to ensuring that the peer review and acceptance process for all of our  journals, whether traditional subscription-based or open access, is robust and to working  with OASPA to ensure this. We are pleased that OASPA has recognized our efforts and  that they will allow us to formally remain a member of the organization while our official  status is put under review.

CAS REGISTRYSM surpasses 75 million small molecules

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), the world’s authority for chemical information, just registered its 75 millionth small molecule.  CAS REGISTRYSM, traditionally known for providing access to substances reported in the literature back to the early 1800s, now contains this substance identified in a chemical catalog. In addition to covering substances from journals and patents, CAS REGISTRY includes substances from chemical catalogs, worldwide governmental regulatory agencies and valuable web resources.  Since CAS registers substances from chemical catalogs on a daily basis, it should come as no surprise that the 75 millionth molecule was registered from a chemical catalog.

CAS is the only organization in the world whose objective is to find, collect and organize all publicly disclosed chemical substance information. To support the needs of discovery chemists and intellectual property professionals worldwide, CAS has collected, and added to the CAS REGISTRY, fine chemicals from commercial suppliers since 1995.  A recent update from Aurora Fine Chemicals to CHEMCATS®, the commercially available chemical database comprising millions of substances from more than 880 suppliers, is the source of the 75 millionth unique small molecule in the CAS REGISTRY.  This molecule, available for purchase from Aurora, may be useful to chemical, biochemical and biomedical researchers alike. Although this compound is new to the CAS REGISTRY, substances similar to it, previously indexed by CAS, have been studied for their medicinal effects.

CAS Registry Number®: 1470595-42-6

3-(Cycloheptyloxy)-6-methyl-N-(1-methylethyl)-2-pyridinemethanamine

Seeking to improve workflow and to help speed the pace of scientific research, CAS provides scientists with convenient and rapid access to starting materials for chemical synthesis, pharmaceutical development, diagnosis and large scale manufacturing.  With the inclusion of chemical suppliers from around the world, SciFinder®, the choice for chemistry research, gives chemists direct access to commercially available fine chemicals.

“Aurora Fine Chemicals is delighted to learn that the 75 millionth substance in the CAS REGISTRY was assigned from our most current catalog,” said Dr. Alexander Kutyrev, managing director of Aurora.  “With more than 18 million chemicals currently in stock, we know that hundreds of thousands of  scientists around the world using SciFinder every day can easily access our catalog to find the material they need quickly and conveniently.”

Registered just a year ago, the 70 millionth substance came from a Korean patent.  This 75 millionth substance, coming from Aurora’s collection of commercially available fine chemicals, shows the breadth of substance sources that CAS monitors to ensure that CAS REGISTRY includes every publicly disclosed substance.

“Every day, scientists at CAS curate the chemical content pouring into the CAS databases,” said Dr. Matthew Toussant, senior vice president of editorial operations at CAS.  “I am especially pleased that our 75 millionth registration comes from the catalog of a fine chemical supplier. The ability to identify sources of available fine chemicals for purchase is a robust and highly valued feature in SciFinder.  CAS scientists seek this information from chemical suppliers in building our CAS databases, and this helps ensure that the world’s reputable disclosed chemistry is included in CAS REGISTRY, the gold standard for substance information.”

Syndetic Solutions™ Adds Facebook Access

ProQuest Syndetic Solutions™, the popular OPAC and discovery layer enrichment tool, is offering a free Facebook® app for all library subscribers, enabling users who “like” their library to connect to the catalog and search for titles right from their library’s Facebook page. For libraries, the app provides another way to engage with users and demonstrate value to the community.

“Providing patrons seamless access to local library catalogs directly through Facebook is a new opportunity for libraries to stay connected to their patron base,” said Sharon Lubrano, ProQuest Vice-President. “We’re excited about enabling libraries to add another gateway to the catalog, build engagement around titles and continually remind patrons to come to the library first.”

With the new Syndetic Solutions Facebook app, library users search holdings by simply clicking on the ‘Search the Catalog’ call-out button on the library’s Facebook page. The topic or keyword searched will return title, author, and ISBN, as well as all of the enriched elements to which the library subscribes — Summaries, Tables of Contents, First Chapters, Author Notes, Cover Images, and more — for all relevant titles in the collection. When the user finds a title they want, the app offers the option of linking to the library’s OPAC and placing a hold. Users can also “like” a title (which is then displayed on the user’s own Facebook page), allowing users to share their new favorite reads with friends and build interest in a broad selection of catalog titles.

Libraries who subscribe to Syndetic Solutions can find all the instructions on how to set up the Facebook App here.
