eLife joins the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association

eLife, publisher of the new open-access journal for outstanding advances in life science and biomedicine, adds its weight to the international association and advocate for open-access publishers.

Established in 2008, the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) is the only industry association exclusively committed to the interests of open-access (OA) publishing – which makes published content freely and immediately available online with a license to use and reuse material without restriction. OASPA helps OA publishers by helping to set standards, advance new business models, promote innovation, and representing members in international matters of policy. The organization is an active advocate in open-access policy developments such as those within the UK, Europe, and internationally.

eLife, the initiative backed by three major biomedical research funders – the Wellcome Trust, the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the Max Planck Society – and publisher of the open-access journal of the same name, today announced it is a full member of OASPA. eLife will contribute to the advancement of the association’s aims for best practices and innovation in open-access publishing.

According to eLife Executive Director Mark Patterson, “eLife is proud to be a member of OASPA. It’s a critical and exciting time for publishers as we build the means and mechanisms to translate the long-established subscription-based system to comprehensive open access. We look forward to working with our partners in this growing coalition to help shape the next era of research communication.”

The eLife journal website was introduced in December 2012 at http://elife.elifesciences.org. For details and more information about the eLife initiative, visit http://www.elifesciences.org.

IOP Publishing announces its new journal, Surface Topography: Metrology and Properties

IOP Publishing (IOP) has announced the launch of a new peer-reviewed journal, Surface Topography: Metrology and Properties. This brings IOP’s journals portfolio to 68 titles.

An electronic-only journal, Surface Topography: Metrology and Properties will focus on the progress in surface topography measurement and characterisation, instrumentation development and the properties of surfaces. The journal aims to provide an international forum for academics, industrialists and engineers from different disciplines to present results, latest research and case studies.

Dr Nicola Gulley, Editorial Director of IOP Publishing, said of the launch: “We are delighted to be launching this new title with such a great Editorial Board who will bring expert knowledge to the journal. Surface Topography: Metrology and Properties will support researchers by giving greater coverage to this important interdisciplinary research area.”
The journal’s Editor-in-Chief is Professor Richard Leach, Principal Research Scientist at the National Physical Laboratory, UK, who has a PhD in Surface Metrology from the University of Warwick and is a fellow of the Institute of Physics.

Professor Leach said: “Many advanced manufacturing industries are now using some form of deterministic control of surface topography to affect the function of component parts. This has resulted in an increase in the research required for the measurement and characterisation of surface topography. The range of disciplines for which the function of a surface relates to its topography is very diverse, from metal sheet manufacturing to art restoration. This new journal will pull the discipline together in one place, helping researchers to share common themes.”

IOP will manage the peer-review process, working closely with the journal’s Editorial Board, as well as taking responsibility for the production, sales and marketing of the journal. It will be published quarterly and will be freely available online until the end of 2013.

Surface Topography: Metrology and Properties is open for submission of papers.

OCLC and ProQuest collaborate to enhance library discovery

ProQuest and OCLC are launching a far-reaching data exchange program that will enhance the library discovery experience for users of OCLC’s WorldCat Local service, ProQuest’s Summon® service, the full-text of ProQuest Central and ebrary e-books. The program shares metadata across some of the world’s most-widely used library resources, enriching the discoverability and comprehensiveness of all the services.

Once the data exchange is completed, libraries that subscribe to both WorldCat Local and ProQuest Central or that own any ebrary content will be able to discover ProQuest records and access associated content through the WorldCat Local interface. Further, the exchange will enhance the discoverability of catalog records in the Summon service, creating the potential for libraries to view other institutions’ WorldCat holdings information within the Summon experience.

“This collaboration improves the user experience by streamlining the research process and improving search comprehensiveness,” said Kurt Sanford, ProQuest CEO. “The information world becomes more complex every day and we feel that user innovations will require cooperation among library service providers. We’re delighted to work with OCLC to make this happen.”

“OCLC member libraries continue to be well served by our long-standing partnership with ProQuest,” said Jay Jordan, OCLC President and CEO. “We are pleased to extend additional value via this new data exchange agreement. Now OCLC member libraries will have deeper access to their ProQuest services through WorldCat Local and those who select Summon will enjoy direct access to WorldCat and OCLC Resource Sharing. Both discovery and delivery for library users will be markedly enhanced.”

ProQuest Central is the largest, multidisciplinary, full-text database available in the market today. This resource provides access to 27 of ProQuest’s most highly used databases, with a variety of content types across over 160 subjects, making this the broadest single research resource in the world.

WorldCat is the world’s largest database of bibliographic information built continuously by OCLC and libraries around the world since 1971. Each record in the WorldCat database contains a bibliographic description of a single item or work and a list of institutions that hold the item. Institutions share these records, using them to create local catalogs, arrange interlibrary loans and conduct reference work. Since 1971, more than 280 million records have been added to WorldCat, spanning more than 6,000 years of recorded knowledge.

Wiley Announces Retirement of Bob Campbell

Steven Miron, Senior Vice President, Scientific, Technical, Medical and Scholarly, John Wiley & Sons, Inc., (NYSE:JWa, JWb) has announced the retirement of longtime executive Bob Campbell.

Campbell’s contributions have undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the company’s trajectory, and his departure prompts reflection on the importance of retirement planning. As employees embark on their retirement journeys, ensuring a robust pension plan becomes paramount.

Yet, amidst the anticipation of this new life chapter, it’s vital for individuals to remain vigilant against potential hazards like pension mis selling. This deceptive practice involves furnishing individuals with inaccurate or misleading information regarding their pension schemes, with severe implications for their financial well-being in retirement.

Despite careful planning efforts, falling prey to such practices can compromise the stability of pension provisions. Thus, as employees transition into retirement, seeking guidance from experts and meticulously scrutinizing pension arrangements emerge as indispensable measures in safeguarding against potential mis-selling traps.

As individuals approach retirement, the importance of securing a sustainable financial future cannot be overstated. Beyond pensions, many are exploring alternative financial products such as reverse mortgages to bolster their retirement income. These options, when utilized correctly, can provide seniors with the necessary liquidity while allowing them to stay in their homes.

However, much like pension plans, they require careful consideration and the guidance of qualified professionals. Before committing to such products, retirees should take the time to research thoroughly and visit trusted resources like their website, where they can access expert advice on the pros and cons of reverse mortgages.

Collaborating with financial advisors to integrate these elements into a holistic retirement plan helps individuals maintain financial security and avoid potential pitfalls that may arise down the road. In the end, the key to a successful retirement lies in taking proactive steps now to secure a prosperous future.

Campbell, who will step down from his post as senior publisher, has worked in the publishing industry for the last 44 years, ever since he graduated with a degree in zoology from Aberdeen University in 1968 and joined Blackwell Scientific Publications (BSP). In building the BSP publication business, Campbell published his first two journals, Freshwater Biology and the Journal of Biogeography, in 1971.

Campbell became editorial director in 1978 and rose through the ranks to become President of Blackwell Publishing and Senior Publisher after Wiley’s acquisition of Blackwell in 2007.

“Bob’s contributions to Wiley and the world of scholarly communication have been truly exceptional,” said Stephen M. Smith, President and CEO of Wiley. “With vision and passion and a knack for building enduring partnerships, Bob led Blackwell Science (and now Wiley) to become the world’s leading publisher for professional and learned societies, a position that has contributed so much to our success both in the past and today as we transform our business in this digital age.”

“We will miss Bob’s energy, wit and wise counsel. Our industry owes him an enormous debt of gratitude,” said Smith.

“I have loved my career in publishing and my time at Wiley,” said Campbell. “However, after 44 years it is time to take a step back, spend more time with my wife and family and enjoy my free time pursuing my interests outside publishing including fly fishing, conservation and farming. I am also sure I will be missing the great colleagues I have had a chance to work alongside for the last many years.”

In addition to his positions at Wiley, Campbell has served as president of the International STM Publishers Association, one of the co-founders and chairman of CrossRef, chair of INASP, an international development organization whose mission is to improve access, production and use of research information and knowledge in developing countries, and served on the Finch group, which provided recommendations on expanding access to published research findings.

Most recently, Bob has been a highly influential voice in the Open Access debate, persuasively championing the importance of maintaining sustainable publishing models that ensure quality and balance the needs of a variety of stakeholders in multiple geographies and disciplines – researchers and their funders, research institutions, scholarly and professional societies, and commercial and not-for-profit publishers.

Frontiers now has a portfolio of open access journals in 14 fields of science and medicine, and published over 5,000 OA articles in 2012.

Working with NPG, the journal series “Frontiers in” will significantly expand in 2013-2014. Currently, sixty-three journals published by NPG offer open access options or are open access and NPG published over 2000 open access articles in 2012. Bilateral links between nature.com and frontiersin.org will ensure that open access papers are visible on both sites.

Frontiers and NPG will also be working together on innovations in open science tools, networking, and publication processes.

Frontiers is based at EPFL in Switzerland, and works out of Innovation Square, a technology park supporting science start-ups, and hosting R&D divisions of large companies such as Logitech & Nestlé.
Quotes from key spokespeople)

“Combining NPG’s established publishing expertise with Frontiers’ innovative solutions for researchers opens up a wealth of opportunities for transforming the landscape of science communication. Frontiers is not only aiming to innovate in open access, but also to provide a more transparent and constructive peer review process, and offer an ecosystem of tools for scientists to build their academic standing.” – Dr Kamila Markram, CEO of Frontiers
“Frontiers is innovating in many ways that are of interest to us and to the scientific community,” said Dr Philip Campbell Editor-in-Chief, Nature. “Referees and handling editors are named on published papers, which is very unusual in the life sciences community. Nature has experimented with open peer review in the past, and we continue to be interested in researchers’ attitudes. Frontiers also encourages non-peer reviewed open access commentary, empowering the academic community to openly discuss some of the grand challenges of science with a wide audience.”

“In Frontiers, we have a partner who shares our desire to further research through increasingly open communication amongst scientists. Our alliance will accelerate both NPG and Frontiers’ experiments, improvements and innovations. We can achieve more together, and more quickly, than either publisher could working alone.” – Steven Inchcoombe, Managing Director, Nature Publishing Group
