DIAMAS report investigating the financial sustainability of institutional publishers and service providers

The DIAMAS (Developing Institutional Open Access Publishing Models to Advance Scholarly Communication) project has published a report investigating the financial sustainability of institutional publishers and service providers. EIFL is a partner in the DIAMAS project, and Milica Ševkušić, Project Coordinator for the EIFL Open Access Programme, is one of the contributors to the report.

The report draws on the results of extensive research conducted across 18 months including a literature review of economic and financial aspects of institutional publishing, quantitative surveys, focus groups, and interviews. Ten EIFL partner countries (Albania, Estonia, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, North Macedonia, Serbia, Slovenia and Ukraine) took part in the survey and one (Serbia) was also involved in focus groups.

The report shows that although institutional publishers and service providers are diverse – in terms of their missions, sizes, services they provide and tasks they perform, access to funding options and the choices they make – they face similar challenges, such as the need for more financial resources, the lack of stability and permanence in personnel and the dependence on parent organizations. Along with public national or regional funders, parent organizations, which provide significant in-kind support (personnel, services), are the main local supporters of Diamond open access (OA).

The report reveals a clear need for stable and long-term funding that entails less administration, and the crucial role of large infrastructures, such as Diamond OA hosting platforms, and open source software. It particularly highlights the need to fund both national and international infrastructures used by many small to medium-size institutional publishers and service providers.

STM Trends 2028 is now live

Flourishing in a Machine-intermediated World: The STM Trends Report

When some of the leading technology minds in scholarly publishing gather each fall to polish their crystal orbs, the outcome has always been an invigorating and enlightening experience. This year, it has proved no different. At the STM Conference in Washington, DC today, the new STM Trends 2028 was released. Rather than focusing strictly on technology and its implications, the group took a slightly broader view, and included a more diverse pool of participants. Members not only of the STM Standards and Technology Committee, but also representatives from the Open ResearchResearch Integrity, and Social Responsibility committees, as well as a number of journal editors engaged in the process. The output is a vision of a world where humans and machines are integrated and engaged to support researchers as they navigate an increasingly complex world that is both analog and digital.

Prior to the start of the meeting in London in December, participants began with an exercise focused on envisioning headlines from the year 2028. In the meeting, the group dug deeper into the trends and issues that might face our community toward the end of the 2020s. As we think about where we are, how things will change and what might be of interest to those in the future, the resultant perspective adds value to the output, which is now available on the STM website

cOAlition S welcomes the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information

Developed by a group of research information specialists, the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information is a community initiative to make research information – such as bibliographic metadata, including funding information and information on use and impact – open to all.

Too often this information is locked inside proprietary infrastructures, meaning that when assessing research and institutions, non-transparent/non-verifiable evidence is used. The Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information seeks to change this.

Organisations which sign this Declaration agree to support four overarching principles, including one that makes openness the default for the research information they use and produce.

cOAlition S has long been a supporter of open metadata.  The Implementation Guidelines of Plan S make it clear that articles published in line with Plan S must include high-quality article level metadata in a standard interoperable non-proprietary format, under a CC0 public domain dedication and that, as a minimum requirement, must include the name of the funder and the grant number/identifier. The Guidelines also specify that articles must include “machine-readable information on the Open Access status and the license embedded in the article, in standard non-proprietary format”. cOAlition S welcomes the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research and encourages funders and research performing organisations to consider signing this. We are delighted to see that some cOAlition S funders – including the Dutch Research Council (NWO), the French National Research Agency (ANR) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) – have already signed this declaration, and that others are actively considering this.

Open principles reaffirm Digital Science’s commitment to open research

Digital Science has today launched its Open Principles, a new initiative that commits its research information solutions to open science now and into the future.

The Principles are the first step in Digital Science’s journey to align more closely with the Barcelona Declaration on Open Research Information from a global research consortium headed by Leiden University, announced earlier today. They are also a concrete articulation of Digital Science’s long-held, core vision of a trusted, frictionless, collaborative research ecosystem that drives progress for all.

Open research practices, and the development of open science tools and solutions, have been at the heart of Digital Science since its inception:

  • When Symplectic began over 20 years ago, it reported on all research outputs, including open access articles and preprints
  • One of Digital Science’s earliest investments, Figshare, has provided an open data repository for researchers for over a decade
  • Since its launch in 2018, Dimensions has had a free web app enabling users to search its industry-leading database of publications and to understand the full context of those publications. This free service has been enhanced in 2024 with the addition of summarization features in the free app, as well as the release of Dimensions Researcher GPT which is freely accessible with ChatGPT Plus
  • Altmetric also has a range of free options for researchers, including badges and bookmarklets.

Commenting on the Barcelona Declaration – which calls on universities to utilize open research resources – Digital Science CEO Dr Daniel Hook says the company has always believed that research is the single most transformational force for the long-term improvement of society, and today’s announcement represents another step on that path.

“Digital Science welcomes the Barcelona Declaration and the global initiative to support open research,” Dr Hook says.

“Open research principles are part of our company’s DNA and they are always something we’re striving towards. When developing our technology, we prioritize open research and tools to make research easier to access. Our company was founded by researchers to help make the research mission easier, better, more open and more globally linked.

“Our new Open Principles are aligned with many of the issues highlighted in the Barcelona Declaration. They are a first step in reaffirming Digital Science’s commitment to open research and will guide our journey toward closer alignment with the community that we serve,” Dr Hook says.

The Principles have been developed by Digital Science’s VP of Open Research and Figshare founder, Dr Mark Hahnel, who believes the Barcelona Declaration will be transformative for researchers and institutions.

“I have always felt lucky to work at Digital Science, as it was formed at a time when the research world was desperate for openness and innovation. At Digital Science, we believe that all aspects of research should be shared as openly as possible,” says Dr Hahnel. “We’ve seen a maturing of the open research and open data movement over the past decade, and to a great extent our company and its solutions, such as Figshare, have played a critical role in helping to disrupt and transform research, making research more open.

“It’s my hope that our new Open Principles will help reflect to the research community just how important we feel open research is in creating benefits for society. These are not just internal principles, they represent our broader commitment to the entire research ecosystem,” Dr Hahnel says.

Digital Science has also recently launched its new Research Transformation campaign, an initiative to challenge the broader research community to think differently about how research should evolve and respond to the changing research landscape to meet societal needs for the benefit of all.
