Altmetric launch enhanced Mendeley demographic data

Alternative metrics provider Altmetric LLP today announce the addition of enhanced Mendeley reader demographics data. This data is collated and displayed on the Altmetric details pages, where users can explore all of the original mentions of each article or other research output and see a breakdown of the geographical, disciplinary and professional status of users storing the article in their Mendeley library.

Altmetric collate mentions of academic articles, datasets and other scholarly outputs from a curated list of online sources including policy documents, news outlets, post-publication peer-review forums, social media sites, and online reference managers.

Altmetric Founder Euan Adie commented, “Working with the recently-released Mendeley API has meant that we can show our users valuable data about not just how many Mendeley users are saving their articles, but also where those users are, and where their interests might lie. This in turn helps give our users a much better understanding of the communities in which their research is receiving attention.”

Altmetric is the only altmetrics provider to display such detailed information about the dissemination of an article amongst online reference manager readers, and users will also be able to click through from the Altmetric details page to the article record on the Mendeley site.

Joyce Stack, Developer Outreach at Mendeley, adds “The objective in launching our improved API and the new dev portal is to engage with developers such as Altmetric so that Mendeley’s data on academic publications – the broadest and most accessible in the industry – can be used in applications that bring benefits to our researcher community. Demonstrating broader impact in this way is clearly something that is valuable to researchers and academics, and we’re keen to continue building on that.”

The enhanced data will be available on the ‘demographics’ tab of Altmetric details pages.
