The Publications Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS) has signed an agreement with Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) to increase open access publishing by the university’s scientists, its first agreement advancing open science in the region. The partnership will last through 2022.
“Our first agreement like this in the Middle East is an exciting development for ACS,” says James Milne, Ph.D., president, ACS Publications division. “ACS is responding to the global call for open science and expanding open access publishing to meet these new needs. We’re looking forward to working with scientists at KAUST, who will benefit from publishing in the most-read and most-cited journals in the field of chemistry.”
Under the terms of the agreement, researchers affiliated with KAUST will receive full article publishing charge support to publish open access in any of ACS’ more than 65 premiere journals. Articles will be made open with a CC-BY license, the most liberal of open access licenses, and researchers will also benefit from a streamlined workflow solution that simplifies the open access licensing and approvals process. As a part of the agreement, KAUST will also benefit from online access to all ACS journals and Chemical & Engineering News.
‘‘KAUST is proud to continue our efforts in open access aligned with global initiatives. Through efforts like this transformative agreement with ACS, we ensure that our research on world-leading scientific advances is available to all,” says J.K. Vijayakumar, Ph.D., library director at KAUST.
ACS supports the growing global interest in open access and to date has partnered across 17 countries and with over 300 institutions worldwide. ACS continues to provide researcher-centric solutions — programs designed to stimulate participation in open access publication across the global community of authors, researchers and ACS members.
The KAUST University Library works with publishers and societies and negotiates innovative ways to strengthen the KAUST open access policy, supplement the KAUST research repository and increase the impact of KAUST research publications with widespread availability throughout the world.
