Figshare will showcase data from 11 Royal Society publications

Our portfolio company Figshare, today announced a new partnership with Royal Society Publishing.

The Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship of many of the world’s most distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of science, engineering, and medicine. The Royal Society publishes high quality, peer-reviewed journals. Nine of their journals cover the full breadth of the biological, physical and cross-disciplinary sciences and Notes and Records is dedicated to the history of science.  They also publish Biographical Memoirs, an annual compilation of individual memoirs, which celebrates the lives and scientific achievements of Fellows of the Royal Society.

As a result of this new partnership, Figshare has created a portal where research outputs published across 11 Royal Society journals will be aggregated under one portal. This will be showcased under one URL here:https://rs.figshare.com/ and each journal will have their own sub-portal. The aim of this new portal is to increase the discoverability of their data and give them a wider oversight of what is referenced in their journals.

Mark Hahnel, CEO and Founder, Figshare said:

“I’m delighted that Figshare has partnered with the Royal Society on progressing their data plans. We have long been an admirer of their forward-thinking attitude in this space and were delighted when we featured in their ‘Science as an open enterprise’ report several years ago. We look forward to a continued partnership, thinking along with their plans for a more open academic agenda.”

Dr Stuart Taylor, Publishing Director, the Royal Society adds:

“If the full potential of research is to be realised it is essential that datasets are open, intelligible and re-useable. For several years, Royal Society journals have required authors to share the datasets on which their articles are based. This partnership with Figshare will help us to make those datasets as available and searchable as possible. It is a great step forward in our open data program.

This new portal is live now – do go and take a look!
