King’s College London to use Altmetric in REF2021 preparations

Data science company Altmetric today announced that King’s College London, which is ranked in the top 25 universities worldwide*, will use Altmetric Explorer for Institutions to help prepare the REF2021 submission. The Research Excellence Framework (REF) is the UK’s system for assessing the excellence of research in higher education institutions.

Altmetric provides evidence of the attention research has received and offers a potential early indication of impact. Using the intuitive Altmetric Explorer for Institutions platform, King’s will be able to monitor the online activity surrounding the academic research published by their institution and peer institutions, which can help them in their REF submission. By offering a comprehensive overview and links to where King’s research has been referenced in policy documents, patents and online media, Altmetric’s insights will help inform the compilation of new and potentially continued impact case studies.

“We’re pleased to have access to Altmetric’s rich database of data during the timeframe in which we are preparing our submission for REF2021”, said Jo Lakey, REF Delivery Director at King’s College London. “It allows us to identify links from our research outputs to policy documents, patents and online activity, such as news and blogs, which will help us prepare our impact case studies and Research Environment statements.”

Altmetric’s CEO Kathy Christian adds: “Preparations for REF2021 require a great deal of time and attention for Higher Education Institutions in the UK. Some requirements are clearly defined, but others require institutions to think outside the box. Altmetrics can provide a very valuable addition to more traditional research metrics, and we’re really excited that King’s  has chosen Altmetric to help them prepare for this important task.”
