In keeping with its mission of helping physicians to provide the best possible care to patients in an era of rapidly changing medical practice, the Southern Medical Journal (SMJ) is now available for the iPad®. The official journal of the Southern Medical Association,SMJ is published by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, a part of Wolters Kluwer Health.

Having switched to an online-only format in 2010, SMJ continues to be progressive in its use of digital technology with the launch of an iPad app. “Our new iPad app furthers SMJ’s mission by delivering essential content on interdisciplinary disease management,” comments G. Richard Holt, MD, MSE, MPH, MABE, Editor-in-Chief of SMJ. “Southern Medical Journal for the iPad presents critical research and commentary in a mobile format that will help our readership make the most of their limited time to keep up with new clinical information.”

The Southern Medical Association is a very innovative organization that embraces technology as a means of better serving its members, so it is appropriate that Southern Medical Journal is now available on the iPad,” comments Karen Abramson, President & CEO, Wolters Kluwer Health Medical Research. “Making its valuable content available digitally will help to make this respected journal more convenient and accessible than ever.”

Valuable Clinical Updates in a Mobile Format
The new SMJ for the iPad app is available for download on the iTunes App StoreSM. The February issue is the first issue available for the iPad, with free access being made available to all users for a limited time. After this introductory period, SMA members and non-member individual subscribers will continue to have full access via a simple login process. Each monthly issue will be posted on the same schedule as the current online-only journal.

Published continuously since 1908, SMJ provides a multidisciplinary focus on a broad range of topics of interest to physicians and other healthcare specialists. Topics covered range from general medicine and surgery to the medical and surgical subspecialties, along with child and maternal health, mental health, emergency and disaster medicine, public health and environmental medicine, and bioethics and medical education.

Southern Medical Journal for the iPad uses optimized digital technology to provide a print-like reading experience. Along with the full contents of each monthly issue, the SMJ app delivers an enhanced reading experience with such features as adjustable text and image sizing via the “pinch and zoom” function, the ability to share articles via email and social media, and more.

Southern Medical Journal continues to be available via the SMJ website, and the app includes a link to the site, where users can view supplemental data and browse the complete journal archives. The app was developed by the SMA’s publishing partner, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins.
