Nature to mark International Women’s Day with first conference on gender equity

Nature is to host its first dedicated gender equity conference, which will spotlight women leaders and role models in academia, research and policy, to mark International Women’s Day. Breaking Barriers for Gender Equity Through Research, a free virtual event which will take place on 9 and 10 March, will highlight the role of research towards achieving gender equality, and create new opportunities for networking and mentoring.

A combination of panel discussions, fireside chats and remarks from keynote speakers such as Ismahane Elouafi of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations and HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan, Princess of Jordan, the conference will also include a new mentorship programme designed especially for this occasion.

Attendees can register as either a mentor or mentee depending on their professional development goals, with the event allowing time for group discussions on aspects of mentoring, as well as occasions for one-on-one chats between mentors and mentees, hoping to encourage the exchange of shared experiences and relatability between individuals.

Representatives from across the Nature Portfolio and Springer Nature brands will form some of the event’s key speakers: Magdalena Skipper; Editor in Chief of Nature, Subhra Priyadarshini; Editor in Chief of Nature India, Akin Jimoh; Editor in Chief Nature Africa, Nadia El-Awady; Editor in Chief of Nature Middle East and Laura Helmuth, Editor in Chief of Scientific American.

As well as editors, there will also be speakers from a variety of global institutions, including Tohoku University in Japan, the Ethiopian Space Science and Technology Institute, the Shiv Nadar University in India and the British Antarctic Survey.

Sessions will examine topics such as excellence in research without borders and gender equity in the context of sustainable development.

Commenting on the conference, Editor in Chief of Nature, Magdalena Skipper said:

“We want to put a spotlight on the amazing work of women working in academia, industry and policymaking and their contribution toward achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 5 “Gender equality”. The conference will also highlight some of the challenges on the road to gender equity and the role of allies, partnerships and institutions in this effort.

“We are delighted to have such a high-profile line-up of speakers, and particularly proud of the conference’s ambition to facilitate new relationships and break down barriers. All those who join us will have the opportunity to make connections with those they may otherwise not have encountered and our ambition is to facilitate the creation of long-lasting and nurturing mentorship and championship partners.”

Jennifer Thomson, President of the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World also said:

“This Nature conference is a fantastic way to celebrate International Women’s Day. It features voices, achievements and lessons learned from women and their allies across the world, who are vital in helping other women fulfill their potential. The power of connection and partnership must not be underestimated when it comes to empowering women to be able to take advantage of opportunities that come their way.

“The past couple of years have shown the urgent need the world has for science and research. In order to find and implement solutions to urgent challenges, we need the people working on these solutions to reflect the society we find these challenges in. Gender equity in interdisciplinary research and policy therefore remains a pertinent issue and this event will examine where we need to focus our attention in order to continue to move forward, and amplify the achievements of women leaders in research to date.”

Italian National Research Council Signs Open Access publishing deal with Frontiers

The Italian National Research Council, Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) has signed an Open Access publishing consortium deal with Gold OA publisher Frontiers. The agreement comes into effect one year after the signature of a similar dealwith the Italian consortium of Biomedical Research Libraries, Bibliosan, underscoring the strong support and commitment of Italy to open-access publishing.

The head of the CNR’s Central Library, Giovanni De Simone, said, “CNR’s first Open Access agreement with a pure OA publisher, Frontiers, is a major step towards making the results of publicly-funded research in Italy openly available by making it easier for CNR researchers to publish their research in Frontiers’ fully open journals.”

The agreement will run for three years starting on January 1st 2022. A total of 39 CNR institutes have already signed on and more institutes are expected to join later in the year, says Ronald Buitenhuis, Frontiers’ Head of Institutional Partnerships. The agreement is of significant benefit to CNR authors: Articles Processing Charges (APC) are covered by the participating institutes and a 10% membership discount is automatically granted to authors who choose to publish in one of Frontiers’ journals.

Dr. Frederick Fenter, Chief Executive Editor of Frontiers, commented, “This agreement will strengthen our partnership with the Italian academic community and provide researchers with cost-effective and efficient access to the services of our open-science platform. We look forward to seeing even more of the world-class research supported by the Italian National Research Council published in the portfolio of Frontiers high-quality open-access journals.”

This national agreement is the latest of a growing number such deals between Frontiers and research institutions worldwide. To date, Frontiers has signed six national publishing deals (with AustriaLuxembourgNorwayQatarSweden, and the UK) and nine additional consortia deals, including three with leading funders (Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Austrian Science Fund [FWF], and the Luxembourg National Fund), providing seamless and cost-effective access of our services to over 555 individual institutions.

HESA and Jisc confirm merger exploration

HESA and Jisc confirm that the two organisations are exploring a merger. The proposed merger will provide significant benefits to UK higher education, combining the expertise of both organisations to create a resilient, joint capability for delivering the sector’s data and digital needs.

HESA has been the designated data body (DDB) for higher education in England since 2018. Should HESA merge with Jisc, a new DDB will need to be designated. The Office for Students (OfS) is therefore launching a call for expressions of interest in becoming the DDB, to which Jisc will respond.

The OfS intends to consult further with the sector in spring 2022, following receipt of expressions of interest.

Further information

  1. HESA has been the DDB for England since 2018 and a merger with Jisc would require the designation of a new DDB. The full process for designation of DDB status is set out in paragraphs one to four of schedule six of the Higher Education and Research Act 2017
  2. This expression of interest relates solely to the role of the DDB in England and does not relate to similar activities which HESA currently conducts for the devolved administrations
  3. HESA’s data analytics team joined Jisc in September 2019, building on the recommendations of the 2017 Bell Review

UBP Open Books releases first OA title – Grow and Evolve Your Business

UBP Open Books, the new Open Access imprint of University of Buckingham Press, has released its first title: Grow and Evolve Your Business edited by Jonathan Reuvid and including a host of high profile contributors.

The title evaluates how the legacy of the Covid pandemic coupled with the after-effects of Brexit on trade and supply chains and rising energy costs have compounded business leaders’ problems. Contributors approach these important issues from two directions.

Part one focuses on the development of entrepreneurial skills and tools for growth generation. This includes a dissertation on the severe cybersecurity risks which impact all growing businesses on a daily basis.

Part two reminds us of management fundamentals and the threats that can trip us up and ambush corporate growth. New business owners and managers need to take this advice on board and managers of established businesses are invited to take the time to revisit current practice. The book offers directions through which companies can ‘build back better.’

Contributors include Grant Thornton LLP, Whitespace and Innovators Highway, Basck, Buckingham Enterprise and Innovation Unit, Carrie de Silva, Tessa Advisory Services, Howman Solicitors, Hunters Law LLP, Boolean Logical, May Figures Limited and patentGate GmbH.

UBP Open Books is the open access monograph imprint of the University of Buckingham Press. It features new titles published on a “gold Open Access basis”, meaning the online edition of a publication is available to be read, downloaded and shared for free, as long as the author is credited. The imprint will utilise a under a CC-BY-NC licence, which limits use to non-commercial contexts, to ensure all digital editions are available equally and openly to a global audience.

UBP Open Books has also launched a new online platform on which to host its Open Access books, with text available as fully readable and downloadable PDFs.

The platforms and first Open Access title can be viewed here:

http://www.ubpopenbooks.com/index.php/ubp/catalog/book/2

As part of its new books strategy, the UBP Open Books imprint will run in tandem with its commissioned books list. The press is also looking at ways to move a number of backlist titles across to its Open Access list.

UBP Open Books will consider any Open Access proposals around its core subjects, which include education, business and economics, cyber security, medicine, humanities and social sciences. All Open Access book publications will be peer-reviewed and for content accepted for publication, book publication or chapter publication charges may apply, depending on whether the type of publication or if it is a single or multi-author publication.

Further information on UBP Open Books and how to submit proposals for consideration can be found at: https://www.unibuckinghampress.com/ubp-open-books

Tom Chalmers, Managing Director of Legend Times, parent company of University of Buckingham Press, commented: “The concept behind UBP Open Books is to really push boundaries in the open access space and work closely with a range of individuals, academic and commercial partners to share their expertise with as wide an audience as possible.

“Our first title Grow and Evolve Your Business is a perfect example of the type of high-quality, relevant content we are looking to produce on a regular basis and there are more titles to follow as we look to grow our list in 2022.”

Springer Nature continues to lead drive for OA transition across Europe

Springer Nature has today announced its latest transformative agreement (TA), with Italy’s National Research Council (CNR), and also announces the renewal of TAs with the Austrian Academic Library Consortium in Austria and the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (VSNU). With the first TA in Egypt with Government support, and its first in Canada and Latin America, announced in the last two months, Springer Nature continues to demonstrate its commitment to driving forward sustainable open research for all, across all economies. This enables researchers from over 2,650 affiliated institutions to publish open access, double that of any other publisher.

Springer Nature’s TA with CNR – Italy’s largest public research institute – is the publisher’s second in Italy. This three-year agreement will see authors in CNR’s 88 research institutes be able to publish OA in over 2,300 Springer, Adis and Palgrave Hybrid journals, as well as having full access to all subscription journal content.

Speaking on the agreement with CNR, Caroline Nevison, Director, Commercial Transition OA at Springer Nature said: “We remain focused on facilitating the OA transition for a growing number of institutions, supporting academic collaboration, discoverability and usability at scale. We are delighted to extend that commitment across Italy with our new agreement with CNR, a partner closely aligned with our principles of advancing scientific discovery. Through this agreement we will be able to better support Italian researchers and their research outputs through the advancement of OA publishing.”

Alongside the new agreement in Italy, the start of 2022 has also seen the renewal of agreements in Austria and the Netherlands. The agreement with the Austrian Academic Library Consortium in Austria is entering its seventh year with an extension to 2023, and includes the addition of nine new institutions. The agreement with the Association of Universities (VSNU), Netherlands, now enters its eight year with an extension through 2022.

Dagmar Laging, Vice President, Institutional Sales Europe at Springer added: “Since Springer Nature pioneered its first TA in 2014, the agreements have proven themselves to be a key component in driving the sustainable transition to OA, and in some regions have enabled country level flips. These deals continue to demonstrate the shared global goal and commitment to open science through the sustainable promotion of open access. We are delighted to be able to continue to work with our longstanding and new partners to deepen this commitment to a truly open future, one which we believe is key to advancing scientific discovery and delivering real life benefits for all.”

Through outreach such as TAs with global partners, Springer Nature continues to support all authors regardless of discipline, location or funding, to publish OA. The publisher’s 17 national agreements, which alongside its institutional deals, now support researchers from over 2,650 affiliated institutions to publish OA, enabling an expected 41,400+ OA articles to be published a year, 10% more than any other publisher. Last year, the publisher was the first to immediately publish one million gold open access primary research and review articles, supporting nearly 2.5 million authors in making their research OA.

More on Springer Nature’s TAs can be found here, with further information on the publisher’s commitment to open science and its wider principles available here.

Canadian institutions to benefit from IOP Publishing open access agreement for the first time

Three-year read and publish agreement signed with Canadian Research Knowledge Network

IOP Publishing (IOPP) and the Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN) have signed an unlimited open access (OA) agreement. The three-year ‘read and publish’ deal offers authors affiliated with 45 CRKN member organisations unlimited OA publishing in IOPP’s hybrid and fully OA journals. The reading component of the agreement provides ongoing access to all of IOPP’s fully owned and partner journals.

The agreement is IOPP’s first transformative agreement for North America. The society publisher now has transformative agreements with 242 institutions in 14 countries.

Julian Wilson, sales and marketing director at IOPP comments: “We see a significant increase in the number of articles published OA in other countries throughout Europe and the Middle East where we have similar agreements in place. We’re looking forward to expanding the reach and visibility of research in North America by making the process of publishing as simple as possible for authors.”

IOPP research shows that OA content is downloaded 80% more than paywalled content and cited 30% more, demonstrating the substantial benefits to publishing OA.

“Working on behalf of our members, CRKN’s priorities continue to be increasing sustainable, cost neutral, open access options for researchers affiliated with CRKN member institutions at no additional cost to the author,” comments CRKN Executive Director, Clare Appavoo.

“I am pleased that we were able to achieve these goals in partnership with IOP Publishing. This agreement will increase access to the content published in IOPP journals as well as the open access output of physicists in Canada,” adds Appavoo.

Read & Publish agreements drive significant increase in Open Access research content

Over 400 institutions in 34 countries are now participating in The Company of Biologists’ Read & Publish Open Access initiative. We have signed agreements with library consortia in Australia, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Spain, the UK and the USA. We have also signed a landmark agreement with EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries) which enables researchers in 30 developing and transition economy countries to publish Open Access articles in our hybrid journals without paying an article processing charge (APC).

The success of our Read & Publish initiative has led to a significant increase in the proportion of Open Access (OA) research content in our hybrid subscription journals, which were the first from any publisher to be afforded Transformative Journal status by Plan S.

In 2021, OA research content increased by 10% in Development, 12% in Journal of Cell Science and 15% in Journal of Experimental Biology. This meant that all journals exceeded the Transformative Journal target for OA growth of 5%.

From 2022, institutions can also choose to include our fully OA journals – Disease Models & Mechanisms and Biology Open – in their Read & Publish agreements.

Claire Moulton, Publisher at The Company of Biologists, says:

“We have a long-standing commitment to OA and a track record of innovation. We were one of the first not-for-profit publishers to offer cost-neutral and uncapped Read & Publish agreements and our journals were the first from any publisher to be afforded Transformative Journal status. Together, these initiatives are already producing great results. Corresponding authors at over 400 institutions across five continents can now publish OA research articles without paying an APC and this has helped us to exceed our Transformative Journal targets in 2021. We look forward to continuing to work closely with our library partners and authors to increase the proportion of OA research content in our hybrid journals further and to meet the ambitious growth targets we have set ourselves in 2022 and beyond.”

Richard Grove, Commercial Manager at The Company of Biologists, says:

“Our Read & Publish initiative has been a big success and we have received wonderful feedback from authors, librarians and library consortia around the world. Most recently we have signed a three-year agreement with the Council of Australian University Librarians (CAUL), and over 35 UK institutions have already confirmed their participation in our 2022-2024 renewal agreement with Jisc, including all that participated in the 2020-2022 agreement. In addition, we are excited that librarians can now choose to include our two fully Open Access journals in their Read & Publish agreements.”

PLOS announces partnership with Einstein Foundation Berlin

The Public Library of Science (PLOS) today announced a new partnership with the Einstein Foundation Award for Promoting Quality in Research.

The Einstein Foundation Award will honor researchers, institutions, collaborations, and organizations that, among other things:
