ebrary and EBL Data Study Sheds Light on Ebook Use

When it comes to ebooks, social sciences far outperform humanities and STM in the percentage of titles used and the average amount of use per book. However, users working with ebooks on STM subjects tend to be more active with their books in each session, downloading or printing content, etc. These are among the findings of new research from Michael Levine-Clark, Associate Dean for Scholarly Communication and Collections Services, University of Denver Libraries. Levine-Clark has completed an intensive examination of usage data supplied by ProQuest ebook businesses ebrary and EBL – Ebook Library. His findings are being presented at the American Library Association’s Midwinter Conference in Philadelphia and form the foundation of ongoing study.

“This is a particularly enlightening study because it dispels the widely-held notion that STM ebooks get higher usage,” said Levine-Clark. “Data provided by leading aggregators now shows us the importance of ebooks to research in the social sciences.”

Levine-Clark’s research also revealed the importance of quality content to users and that they prefer titles from university presses to those from other publishers. “University press ebooks are used at a higher rate by all measures,” said Levine-Clark. “Users of ebooks appear to be making some judgment about quality.”

The data set from ebrary and EBL was anonymized and provided to Levine-Clark in the aggregate. Collected over the course of three to four years, the data encompassed more than 7,000 libraries and included more than a half-million titles. Within the data, Levine-Clark explored sessions and user activities, such as views, printing, copying and full-title downloads. His findings are being captured in a white paper that will be available on both the ebrary and EBL websites in March.

Levine-Clark’s presentation is Friday, January 24, 4:00pm, in room 203A of the Philadelphia Convention Center. The initial findings being presented are aimed at benchmarking usage trends. Subsequent analysis will dive further into key areas and identify patterns useful for libraries and consortia for local planning.

Leveraging Alma’s open architecture, the first deliverable of this project will automatically update Alma with all print and electronic purchasing transactions that are made through the SwetsWise platform or any other Swets channel. A future deliverable will update the SwetsWise platforms with workflows that are initiated in Alma, thereby further streamlining workflows and processes for library staff. Ex Libris and Swets plan to release the first product of their partnership by mid-2014, and will extend the collaboration over the following months.
“We’re looking forward to using the end-to-end acquisition workflow being developed by Ex Libris and SWETS,” observed William Jordan, associate dean at the University of Washington Libraries. “Being able to search the SwetsWise catalog and create orders in SwetsWise that are automatically reflected in Alma will be a big step forward in efficiency. The kind of integrated life-cycle management planned for future development is also very exciting. It’s great to see two of our biggest vendors working together like this for the benefit of their mutual customers.”
“Our collaboration with Ex Libris clearly highlights our commitment to improving and developing integrated workflow components that simplify the day-to-day workload for our library customers,” said Ted van Dongen, chief technology officer at Swets. “Customers will benefit from a streamlined acquisition process, whether they purchase content via our SwetsWise online procurement platform or through our customer service channels. OCLC introduces WorldCat Discovery Services

OCLC introduces WorldCat Discovery Services, a new suite of cloud-based applications that brings together the FirstSearch and WorldCat Local services. Set to launch in March, the new suite will enable discovery of more than 1.3 billion electronic, digital and physical resources in libraries around the world through a single search of both WorldCat and a central index that represents nearly 2,000 e-content collections. This will make it possible for more than 18,000 FirstSearch libraries to offer a richer discovery experience.

“Development of WorldCat Discovery Services is another significant step in our work with members to deliver innovations and new services that drive library costs down and information access up. We have enormous potential to use our collective talents and the capacity of cloud computing to deliver continuous innovation for our users,” said Skip Prichard, OCLC President and CEO.

WorldCat Discovery Services will offer library users and staff access to rich, global bibliographic content available only through WorldCat. A central index will enable information seekers from mutually subscribing libraries to search authoritative sources from providers such as EBSCO, Gale and ProQuest. Direct link resolution from citations to full-text resources will be available for libraries with holdings in WorldCatand the WorldCat knowledge base. Resources not available electronically can be delivered through integrated interlibrary loan.

“OCLC is letting its mission drive its actions,” said Angi Faiks, Associate Director of Access, Instruction and Research Services, Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, and a participant in beta testing. “OCLC is reinforcing its public purpose by providing more access to more information for more people. Making library collections more accessible can only help us fulfill our mission as libraries.”

“I see WorldCat Discovery Services as an ideal combination of applications for librarians and end users alike,” said Kurt Munson, Resource Sharing and Reserve Librarian, Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, and part of the Reference Advisory Group. “WorldCat Discovery can help us do the complicated work librarians do, and yet it is simple enough for users to just walk up, use it and find what they need.”

WorldCat Discovery Services will be available to FirstSearch users in March as part of existing subscriptions. FirstSearch will operate in parallel during a year-long transition so libraries can choose when to move to the new service.

New features for FirstSearch subscribers include access to the central index that represents more than a billion articles, e-books and other e-content; a new user interface that adapts automatically to mobile devices; and the ability to manage access to digital collections.

Additional new features provided for libraries that maintain up-to-date holdings in the WorldCat database include direct links to full-text resources to which they subscribe, a built-in A to Z list, and their library’s resources listed first in search results. Libraries that maintain holdings in WorldCat will also continue to benefit from increased visibility of their resources through search engines and other popular websites where research often begins.

The WorldCat Discovery Services suite also offers subscribers several optional features for a fee, such as real-time availability, group view of available resources, management of course reserves or reading lists, or customized traffic and usage reports.

“WorldCat Discovery Services is an important advancement for our loyal FirstSearch users,” said Andrew K. Pace, Executive Director, OCLC Networked Library Services. “This new suite has been developed and refined based on input and feedback from a 30-member Advisory Group and more than 650 FirstSearch beta test libraries around the world over the past 18 months.”

WorldCat Local libraries will also move to WorldCat Discovery Services over the next 18 months. The transition will begin in April with a beta period when WorldCat Local subscribers can begin using the new services and plan transition activities.

WorldCat Discovery Services is OCLC’s second cloud suite. WorldShare Management Services, released in 2011, is a cloud suite of library management applications that is helping libraries reduce library management costs, streamline workflows, and improve access to their collections and services. There are currently more than 180 libraries using WorldShare Management Services and 100 more libraries and library groups in implementation.

Learn more about WorldCat Discovery Services during the ALA Midwinter presentation, “The Future of FirstSearch and WorldCat Local: What OCLC’s New Discovery Services Mean for Your Library,” on Saturday, January 25, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 108 B.

More about the new WorldCat Discovery Services suite is on the OCLC website.

De Gruyter Open and Academy of Management in Poland announce collaboration on five journals

De Gruyter Open is pleased to announce a publishing agreement with the first private Polish Academy of Management (SAN)

The Academy of Management (SAN) is a teaching and research body founded in 1994. Over the past two decades SAN has quickly grown into a top-ranking university, earning a nationwide reputation as a modern and career-oriented institution, offering graduate and post-graduate education, doctoral seminars, postgraduate and MBA. Since its inception, SAN has focused on sustainable innovation and on building an international profile, which resulted in combining forces with Clark University – the oldest graduate institution in the United States. Founded in 1887, Clark, along with Harvard and Yale, is one of the three New England universities, to have instituted the prestigious Association of American Universities. The Academy of Management (SAN) in Poland has initiated cooperation with De Gruyter Open to publish five journals from a variety of disciplines, from Computer Science, Management and Business to Finance or Education.

The decision by SAN to commission the publishing of its journals with top Open Access service provider De Gruyter Open was driven in particular by the quest for international authors.

De Gruyter Open has been a trusted publisher of over 250 fully open access journals, issued in partnership with societies and academic institution customers from 25+ countries. The journals enjoy tailored-made production, marketing and distribution services, aimed to increase the discoverability of content, and thus citations. It is precisely this solid track record of developing the international reach of journals that has triggered SAN’s decision to commit to De Gruyter Open.  “We needed a leading publisher of open access scientific content,” says Michał Chmielnicki, a faculty member of SAN, adding, “As emerging journals, there is a clear aim for SAN’s offering to grow and expand.”

While the editorial policy remains at the discretion of SAN, De Gruyter Open is set to introduce a customized web presence for all the titles comprised in the agreement, along with their inclusion in the relevant abstracting services. The content will be stored on De Gruyter Online, ensuring premier alerting systems and a user-friendly interface.

CABI Automates its Semantic Enrichment Process and Interlinks its Content with TEMIS’s Luxid®

TEMIS, the leading provider of Semantic Content Enrichment solutions today announced it has signed a strategic agreement with CABI, an inter-governmental, not-for-profit organization providing information and applying scientific expertise to solve problems in agriculture and the environment.

CABI has scientific research, international development, knowledge management and publishing at its core. By generating and increasing access to scientific knowledge, and delivering change through development projects, CABI works to improve crop yields, combat agricultural pests and microbial diseases, protect biodiversity and safeguard the environment, which enables the world’s poorest communities to feed themselves.

Two key trends that CABI faces as a major publisher of scientific information are the exponential growth rate of the volume of published articles on one hand, and on the other the emergence of the “Web of Data”, which is shaping a demand for more structured data products in addition to traditional information products based on content.

To address these trends, CABI has decided to optimize its content indexing which was previously primarily manual, by integrating TEMIS’s Luxid® Content Enrichment Platform in its content management workflow. CABI’s first objective is to make efficiency gains through automation and reduce indexing costs associated with the increase of content volumes while ensuring high levels of metadata quality. The rich semantic metadata extracted from its content will enable more sophisticated search, navigation and discovery tools on CABI’s online portals, promoting greater user engagement. Luxid®’s semantic enrichment pipeline will furthermore enable the extraction from text of structured information as well as semantic relationships, enabling CABI to create linked data products connected to the larger Web of Data.

“As a database publisher with many decades of experience in metadata and content indexing, we are very excited to be working with TEMIS to take our semantic enrichment endeavors to a whole new level.  This will allow us to improve existing products, but more importantly to create new value from the rapidly growing content assets within our portfolio.  We see this as a major step towards achieving our goal to be the world’s leading source of knowledge and insights in agriculture and related disciplines,” said Andrea Powell, Executive Director, Publishing, CABI.

“We are truly delighted to start a new collaboration with CABI. TEMIS will help CABI produce high-value metadata to interlink its content and support its digital strategy in the coming years,” said Vincent Nibart, Sales Director, TEMIS.

Based on patented and award-winning Natural Language Processing technologies, Luxid® exploits off-the-shelf extractors called Skill Cartridges® to extract targeted information from unstructured content and semantically enrich it with domain-specific metadata. Luxid® also includes Content Enrichment Studio, a suite of productivity tools that enables end-users to customize Skill Cartridges® or develop their own. This will enable CABI to embed its own thesaurus within a dedicated Skill Cartridge® and consistently align its metadata across its product line with its thesaurus.
