Maverick and Dublin Six form alliance to take The Auditor to market

Maverick Publishing Specialists, the specialist strategic consultancy and outsource services company for the publishing industry, today unveiled their new alliance with the rapidly emerging and innovative digital library services company, Dublin Six (www.dublinsix.com). Over the next few months, Maverick and Dublin Six will combine forces and expertise under a new corporate entity designed to fully develop and launch Dublin Six’s groundbreaking library usage logging and holdings verification software The Auditor™.

Alongside Maverick Publishing Specialists team at the Frankfurt Book Fair this year, Josh Pyle, CTO and President of Dublin Six, will also be joining Martin Marlow (Maverick CEO and now also CEO of Dublin Six) to present The Auditor™ and announce its move from Pilot to worldwide Beta release.

Maverick and Dublin Six have been working together for the last year on developing the supporting commercial models and support infrastructure for this unprecedented product. The Auditor™, which Dublin Six has had in initial and pilot development over the last 2 years, is now ready to enter beta testing and accept new customers on a worldwide scale. The beta phase will be formally announced at the Frankfurt Book Fair, where Maverick and Dublin Six will also be talking to organizations that are interested in investing in The Auditor’s final development to commercial launch and beyond.

The Auditor™, available on a yearly subscription basis, is an innovative software package designed to dramatically increase time- and cost-efficiencies for institutional libraries. Installed on an institution’s network, The Auditor™ passively monitors all network traffic and makes libraries aware of every form of content that is being used. It presents this information in clear and comprehensive COUNTER-style reports. While libraries usually receive reports from only those publishers with whom they have a relationship, The Auditor’s reports include content from every publisher on every platform. The Auditor™ also reports on content from open access or free information sources. In addition, The Auditor™ far exceeds the granular level of detail currently available from other solutions on the market.

Alongside hitherto unavailable levels of usage tracking, The Auditor™ also continuously monitors and verifies the institution’s uninterrupted access to all content for which it has paid (or unpaid) access – instantly and automatically alerting the library and its users whenever there is a broken link or other service interruption. This not only supplies invaluable, real time data to help libraries provide optimum service provision to their patrons, but also assists them accurately monitor and compare against any service level agreements they have in place with their content providers. And as the Auditor software is deliberately designed to monitor all activity without any active assertion or external calls, it  won’t artificially inflate the usage statistics gained.

Speaking of the announcement Josh Pyle, President and CTO Dublin Six, said “After two years of development and testing, we are excited to be joining with Maverick to bring this revolutionary new product to market.” Martin Marlow, Principal and CEO Maverick Publishing Specialists, and Dublin Six’s newly instated CEO, further commented, “The Auditor™ is a fantastic product. Designed with the library in mind, it will analyse exact usage patterns to help librarians and institutions make informed purchase decisions. We’re excited to be working with Dublin Six in this venture and to add our business infrastructure and customer support expertise to help them bring this fabulous service to market.”

EBSCO Information Services Releases a Complimentary Version of ERIC To Provide Access During the Government Shutdown

EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) is making the government database ERIC available during the government shutdown. ERIC, the Education Resource Information Center, is typically available through the government website (http://eric.ed.gov/) as well as via EBSCO’s EBSCOhost® research platform. Because of the shutdown the government website is unavailable so EBSCO has decided to temporarily open its version of ERIC and make it available at:http://www.ebsco.com/freeERIC .

ERIC provides access to educational literature and resources including access to information from journals included in the Current Index of Journals in Education and Resources in Education Index. It was designed as a national information system to provide access to education literature and resources. According to its website, “ERIC is the world’s largest and most frequently used education digital library.” ERIC provides more than 1.4 million bibliographic records and dates back to 1966.

EBSCO is the provider of hundreds of research databases for academic institutions, public libraries, schools, hospitals and medical institutions, corporations and government organizations. EBSCO Information Services President Tim Collins says the decision to make ERIC available to users while service from the government site is interrupted was an easy one. “We know our users who access ERIC on EBSCOhost find it to be a valuable resource and we understand that having access to a resource like ERIC shut off handicaps some researchers. Therefore, we have decided to provide this temporary access in order to assist these researchers.”

Because of the shutdown, access to the full text of articles and other materials will not be available but researchers will have access to the full set of A&I records on EBSCOhost. Users going tohttp://www.ebsco.com/freeERIC will now see ERIC listed among the other free EBSCO databases such asGreenFILE and Library, Information Science & Technology Abstracts (LISTA).

Maney Publishing partners with Amigos

The MORE Collections offered by Maney provide instant access to over 150 international peer-reviewed journals in the fields of material science and engineering, humanities and social sciences, health sciences and the newly acquired collection of philosophy, religion and theology titles.

In addition, Amigos members will benefit from the migration at the end of the year, of all the Maney journal content to Atypon’s Literatum online publishing platform. Literatum is widely recognised as an industry leader and will offer the members an enhanced online service from which to access the MORE Collections.

“Amigos Library Services is excited to add Maney Publishing to our Member Discount Program,” commented Gerrye McEntire, Member Discount Services Manager, Amigos Library Services. “This new partnership means Amigos member libraries can now benefit from the instant access to numerous peer-reviewed journals. EBSCO Enters ILS Partnership with Slovakia’s SVOP Connecting Mutual Customers with EBSCO Discovery Service

A new ILS partnership between EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) and Slovakia’s SVOP will provide access to EBSCO Discovery Service’s (EDS) unified index for mutual customers. The partnership will further expand the quality and amount of content available for SVOP users while adding the enhanced features and functionality available from EDS.

Based in Slovakia, SVOP Ltd. has been focusing on information technology since 1996. SVOP’s library information system, DAWINCI services customers in Slovakia as well as in Czech Republic and assists with their needs in education and research. Partnering with EBSCO will enable SVOP customers to integrate critical components of EDS into their library solution.

SVOP Technical Director, Ján Grman sees the partnership as a great benefit to customers. “Our partnership with EBSCO extends the possibilities for both of our end-users and customers in accessing huge collections of the best databases from around the world. It is also an opportunity for us to offer mutual technology solutions to our local market.”

EBSCO’s continuing effort to improve accessibility and usability for customers by expanding the integration of services, improves discovery and delivery of content.

EBSCO Discovery Service is quickly becoming the discovery selection for many libraries (www.ebscohost.com/discovery/eds-news), and an obvious partner for content providers. Because the service builds on the foundation provided by the EBSCOhost® platform, libraries gain a full user experience for discovering their collections/OPAC—which is not typical in the discovery space. Further still, in the many universities and other libraries where EBSCOhost is the most-used platform for premium research, users are not asked to change their pathways or habits for searching. There’s simply more to discover on the familiar EBSCOhost platform, and the same can be said for library administrators who can leverage their previous work with EBSCOadmin.

Financial Maths is not just for mathematicians, and accountants, it is part of our everyday life. From understanding the details of your wage slip to working out the interest that will be applied to your mortgage application, it is important that we understand where our money goes and how best to manage it.

ALISON, a global leader in free online learning has announced a major partnership with Maths Doctor – the award winning maths tutoring company from international publishing company, Macmillan Science & Education. The partnership will provide a comprehensive, interactive and free online learning maths resource to help people in Ireland understand how financial maths affects everyone on a daily basis.

Areas that are covered include: understanding compound interest, income tax, gross pay, benefits of investing, profit, loss and savings. The course is easily accessible, free to use and topics are delivered through video by qualified, experienced maths tutors.

The lesson forms part of the overall multimedia Project Maths resource created by ALISON in partnership with Maths Doctor.  This resource is aligned with the Irish Leaving Certificate Project Maths Syllabus, and has been reviewed and appraised by educationalists teaching and working directly with the curriculum on a daily basis.

Project Maths, which was added to the Irish curriculum in 2012, was designed to help students apply maths to everyday life and prepare them for working in science or engineering fields. A survey carried out by Engineers Ireland in August 2013, found that nearly 60% of CEOs and Managing Directors of engineering employers in Ireland believe that the new maths curriculum will benefit students’ overall problem solving and skills.

Welcoming the partnership, ALISON CEO Mike Feerick says: “This programme merges ALISON’s global platform capabilities with the online tutoring of Macmillan’s Maths Doctor. The partnership is a first step in ALISON’s Universal STEM Programme created to provide support and additional tuition in the form of free online lessons in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math subjects for students at post-primary level. Irish students and parents alike are certain to benefit from using this free resource. They should try it!”

Simon Walsh, Managing Director of Maths Doctor and an ex-Maths teacher explained, “For over 170 years, Macmillan has been at the forefront of educational innovation.  The interactive digital resources from Maths Doctor will allow pupils, parents and adult learners to study mathematics in a new and pioneering way.”

The ALISON and Maths Doctor programme has been created in support of and in collaboration with teachers working directly with the Project Maths curriculum within the education system.  These include the Galway Education Centre, Athenry Maths Academy and Project Maths Teachers. Catering for both higher and ordinary level across the five strands of the syllabus, it aims to support the existing high level of maths teaching already found across the country and can also be used by Project Maths teachers to re-enforce their understanding of financial maths.
