Springer signs deal to provide NYU with its Springer Book Archives

springerSpringer announced that it has entered into an agreement to provide New York University (NYU) with the entire English-language contents of its Springer Book Archives (http://springer.com/bookarchives). This deal grants access to around 50,000 English-language titles to researchers, students and faculty at one of the nation’s top-ranked universities. The books are available via Springer’s online platform, SpringerLink (link.springer.com).

The SBA project launched in 2010 when Springer decided to digitize nearly every book it had ever published, in both English and German, dating back to the 1840s. This massive undertaking culminated in the product’s official launch in January 2013, and NYU joins the roster of those schools that have since purchased the SBA.

The archives are organized into 11 broad subject collections, including: Behavioral Science; Biomedical and Life Sciences; Business and Economics; Chemistry and Materials Science; Computer Science (including Professional and Applied Computing); Earth and Environmental Science; Engineering; Humanities, Social Sciences and Law; Mathematics and Statistics; Medicine; and Physics and Astronomy. By purchasing the entire SBA, NYU libraries now offer patrons the widest possible breadth of English-language Springer eBook content. The books are also DRM free, and are the university’s to use in perpetuity.

PeerJ now indexed in CAB Abstracts

PeerJ is pleased to announce that they are now being indexing by CABI for inclusion in their CAB Abstracts database (http://www.cabi.org/publishing-products/online-information-resources/cab-abstracts/).

CABI is a not-for-profit, international treaty organization, dedicated to the dissemination of scientific knowledge. CAB Abstracts is an important resource in the applied life sciences, where its coverage includes agriculture, environment, veterinary sciences, applied economics, food science and nutrition.

In addition to now being indexed by CAB Abstracts, PeerJ is also indexed in PubMed, PubMed Central, Scopus, the DOAJ, Google Scholar and the ACS Databases.

Copyright Clearance Center Joins Open Researcher and Contributor ID Initiative (ORCID)

Copyright Clearance Center, Inc. (CCC), a not-for-profit organization creating global licensing, content and Open Access (OA) solutions that make copyright work for everyone, has joined the Open Researcher and Contributor ID (ORCID) initiative.

ORCID is an open, non-profit, community-based effort to provide a registry of unique researcher identifiers and a transparent method of linking research activities and outposts to these identifiers. It’s unique in its ability to reach across disciplines, research sectors, and national boundaries and its cooperation with other identifier systems.

The ORCID community includes individual researchers, universities, national laboratories, commercial research organizations, research funders, publishers, national science agencies, data repositories, and international professional societies, all of whom will benefit from a sustainable, updated central registry for researchers.

“ORCID’s activity and work in evangelizing the need for standards not only improves scholarly communications for all participants, but is better for scholarly communication overall,” said Roy Kaufman, Managing Director of New Ventures for CCC. “The potential benefits of a system of standardized, persistent researcher identifiers for tracking institutional research outputs, grant management, open access and publication ethics, to name a few uses, cannot be understated.”

CCC, named one of “10 to Watch” by information industry analyst Outsell in its 2013 Open Access Market Report, has been helping publishers improve the author experience in collecting Article Processing Charges (APCs) for over six years, and welcomes efforts toward standardization and transparency. Springer to publish journal portfolio of the Association for Behavior Analysis International

springerStarting in 2014, Springer will collaborate with the Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) to publish The Behavior Analyst, The Analysis of Verbal Behavior and Behavior Analysis in Practice. The organization’s three journals will be available in print and electronically on SpringerLink (link.springer.com), giving students, practitioners and researchers access to the latest information in behavior analysis.

The Behavior Analyst publishes articles on theoretical, experimental and applied topics in behavior analysis. The Analysis of Verbal Behavior primarily publishes experimental or theoretical papers relevant to a behavioral analysis of verbal behavior. Behavior Analysis in Practice is a translational publication designed to provide science-based, best-practice information relevant to service delivery in behavior analysis.

OUP plans Nelson Thornes transition for early 2014

oupNelson Thornes will formally integrate into Oxford University Press early next year, it was announced today.

OUP, which is a department of the University of Oxford, acquired the educational publisher in January 2013. It has since operated Nelson Thornes as a standalone subsidiary.

Today OUP outlined its vision for the future, with Nelson Thornes’ wide range of print and digital publishing joining the wider group as part of OUP’s Oxford Education division.

Nelson Thornes covers a broad range of subject areas with its home learning, primary, secondary, and vocational resources. From early 2014 its former titles will be published under the OUP imprint and will be sold and distributed alongside Oxford resources. Its popular online secondary brand, Kerboodle, will be adopted across all OUP’s secondary digital publishing.

Its Cheltenham office is expected to remain open until March 2015, and its premises in Newcastle will remain open for the foreseeable future. Employees will be combined into a single structure as part of the transfer, and full consultations will take place with all staff affected.

Kate Harris, Managing Director of Oxford Education, said: “Nelson Thornes has a wealth of excellent print and digital materials, which add breadth and additional quality to the OUP range. With our combined resources we will be able to provide unprecedented support for teachers and students in pursuit of our mission.”

Serials Solutions and Jisc Collections’ Knowledge Base+ announce new collaboration to improve library workflows

serialSerials Solutions are now collaborating with Jisc Collections KB+ to improve library workflows by transferring data from KB+ to the Serials Solutions knowledgebase. This cooperative effort will keep current data from Jisc Collections up to date in the Serials Solutions knowledgebase, saving libraries time. In partnership with Jisc Collections, we are committed to extending this initiative by programmatically updating both journal title data within Serials Solutions knowledgebase and library-specific holdings.

In another collaborative effort, Jisc Collections has shared with us the license data for the resources negotiated by Jisc Collections. This leadership effort by Jisc Collections has resulted in very detailed license data for the JISC Collections resources. That data is being put into our License Template library, available to all users of 360 Resource Manager.

This cooperation will benefit libraries using both the KB+ and Serials Solutions services:

  • The most current data from KB+ will be integrated into Serials Solutions knowledgebase
  • Saves librarians time and effort by keeping collection information up-to-date in Serials Solutions knowledgebase
  • Ensures better discoverability of valuable content
  • Makes e-resource management more efficient
  • Increases ROI through Serials Solutions management services

The collaboration is symbolic of both organizations commitment to improve UK libraries. It represents just one example of Jisc’s commitment to freely share its data, and is another example of Serials Solutions’ commitment to improve resource discovery and management through a comprehensive and managed knowledgebase.

Other recent Serials Solutions developments specifically designed for UK libraries include the addition of important publisher title lists to the knowledgebase, along with the development of SCONUL accreditation reports within the 360 Counter assessment service.

EBSCO Information Services and GBV in Germany Develop Partnership Creating More Options for Discovery

ebsconewEBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) and the Common Library Network in Germany (GBV), one of the biggest library services in Germany, have signed an agreement to enable integrated access between EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS) and GBV’s VuFind service. GBV serves more than 250 academic libraries in Germany in the states of Bremen, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, Thuringia, and the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.

GBV recently launched a new service based on the Open Source search interface, VuFind. EBSCO’s collaboration with the GBV creates a seamless integration of VuFind and EDS. Any library choosing GBV’s VuFind solution with EDS will be able to access an expanded selection of content and have the ability to acquire materials from one comprehensive source.

Minister launches Aberystwyth University’s international partnership with Emerald

A new service provided by Aberystwyth University which aims to provide busy professionals across the globe with university accreditation was officially launched by the Minister for Education and Skills, Huw Lewis AM, on Monday 23 September.

Aberystwyth has teamed up with Emerald Group Publishing Limited, a leading global publisher of international library and information management research and ASLIB, The Association for Information Management, to provide employees and employers across the globe with higher education accreditation in information leadership.

‘Pathways to Information Leadership’ is an online and e-learning professional development programme which offers over 25 courses for individuals who want to become, or aspire to be, information leaders.

Professor April McMahon, Aberystwyth University’s Vice-Chancellor, said; “We are delighted to formally announce our partnership with Emerald and ASLIB. This provides us with an excellent opportunity to further develop our provision of distance learning, alongside a global leader in publishing.
