JBC Affinity Sites launch on HighWire

The American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) is proud to announce the launch of 21 JBC Affinity Sites: www.jbc.org/site/affinitysites. Categorized by subspecialties in biochemistry and molecular biology, these new sites emphasize recent and most-read research articles, literature reviews and other information in each area of investigation.

The JBC’s leadership conducted a series of in-depth surveys and analyses, before the journal’s move to online-only in 2012. From that information, the JBC’s Editor-in-Chief and associate editors were inspired to segment the Journal’s content into topics. The web-based topics, called affinity sites, allow visitors to the JBC website to enjoy a more substantive and thorough experience of searching and browsing through the extensive archive of articles gathered over the century of the Journal’s history. Today, the JBC continues to be a standard-bearer of excellent biochemical and molecular biology research and publishes over 4300 articles a year.

The new 21 affinity sites cover the most dynamic areas of fundamental biochemical and molecular biology research. From bioenergetics to signal transduction, each affinity site presents latest research papers, author profiles, minireviews, Classics and Reflections in a subspecialty. By looking at an affinity site, a scientist can quickly grasp the history of the field and its cutting-edge research and challenges, as well as identify investigators who are active in the field. Each affinity site is managed by a team of associate editors who collaborate within their shared fields of expertise to create guidelines, promote scientific advances, and seek out emerging areas.

“With these affinity sites, we offer a greater sense of community for our authors and readers with shared interests,” noted JBC Editor-in-Chief, Marty Fedor at The Scripps Research Institute. “While keeping the same high standards for JBC content and editorial integrity, we felt it was the right time to break down the monolith and make the journal more user-friendly for those who don’t have unlimited time to browse each weekly issue.”

Tying the affinity sites together is a new and related JBC editorial board site that connects authors to JBC’s 800+ reviewing editorial board members. The site helps authors identify prospective reviewers by area of expertise prior to submission. Editorial board members control their profiles through HighWire’s Bench>Press manuscript submission system.

“Working alongside the JBC’s board, the HighWire Open Platform capabilities pull together related content into a series of specialty satellite sites,” says Tom Rump, Managing Director of HighWire Press. “Our aim is to help our publishers reach their respective audiences by using our technology to facilitate their role as an informational authority.”

“Specialty satellite (or mini) sites on HighWire allow publishers to highlight what they think is most important to their readership,” adds Tara Robenalt, HighWire’s Director of Product Management. “They are flexible sites which can also feature targeted advertisements, clinical trials or affiliated links and are designed for publishers to test new concepts, collections, and interactive features while keeping their core content intact.”

Springer Science+Business Media to acquire Papers

Springer Science+Business Media has reached an agreement to acquire Mekentosj BV and Lifve Ltd. which includes the software tool Papers. Papers is the leading reference manager which allows researchers to organize, use, share and cite their research literature more effectively.

Papers radically improves the way researchers handle their scientific literature. It centralizes search, downloads and organizing references and documents in one tool. The literature can be cited in the word processing software of choice, can be shared with colleagues and functions as a personal library of research. Papers is available for Mac, Windows and iOS.

Peter Hendriks, Springer President Publishing and Marketing, said: “This acquisition is in line with Springer’s ambition to offer not only quality content, but also efficiency tools for researchers. Discovering and managing scientific content is at the heart of researcher activity and our role includes supporting libraries and funders who increasingly seek to equip their researchers with the best tools.”

The current Papers employees, including the founder, Alexander Griekspoor, will continue to run Papers as a unit within Springer.

“We are not only very excited about the opportunities that being part of a larger group will bring, but also about the next phase of growth and development for Papers. Springer has played a notable, and often unique role, among major STM publishers for its willingness to experiment with business models and services for its stakeholders and this is a good sign for us,” said Alexander Griekspoor. “Our customers will enjoy the same level of service they have been accustomed to, but will ultimately benefit from the wider scope and global presence that Springer provides.”

UK government stands up for open access with a £10 million funding boost

In line with the UK government’s commitment to free and open access to publicly-funded research, Universities and Science Minister David Willetts recently announced a £10 million cash injection to the top 30 UK research-intensive institutions, to aid the transition to open access and compliance with the new Research Council UK Open Access Policy.

As the pioneer of open access publishing and the largest open access publishers with over 300 journals across STM, BioMed Central, ChemistryCentral and Springer through SpringerOpen andSpringer Open Choice, are delighted by the steps the  government and RCUK are taking in supporting open access and increasing the visibility of the UK’s research output.

Speaking at the British Science Festival in Aberdeen at the beginning of September, David Willetts said: “This extra £10 million investment will help some of our universities move across to the open access model. This will usher in a new era of academic discovery and keep the UK at the forefront of research to drive innovation and growth.”

The new RCUK OA policy launched on the 16 July 2012 states that all peer-reviewed published research articles and conference proceedings funded by RCUK from 1 April 2013 must be open access (although researchers are encouraged to begin OA publishing as soon as possible). While RCUK will still support a mixed approach to open access via ‘green’ and ‘gold’ OA routes, the policy aims to make it simpler for UK institutions and researchers to publish in open access journals, including paying for Article Processing Charges (APCs) through block grants to UK Higher Education institutions, approved independent research organizations, and Research Council Institutes. This is in line with the recommendations of the Finch report on open access, published in June 2012.

The Finch Report, together with this additional £10 million government funding announcement, signals significant developments for the open access movement in the UK, further ensuring that the results of UK research are made openly available for all.

BioMed CentralChemistryCentralSpringerOpen and Springer Open Choice are working closely with these UK institutions to set up Membership accounts to help manage publication visibility and provide discounts that will further extend the benefits of this extra funding.

If you are interested in finding out more about the RCUK policy and the implementation for these new funding schemes within BioMed CentralChemistryCentralSpringerOpen and Springer Open Choice please get in touch.

New SAGE licence enables access to scholarship for University Alumni

AGE today announced a change to its licenses that will provide university alumni with access to the content hosted on the SAGE Journals, SAGE Research Methods and SAGE Knowledge platforms through their university library. All alumni registered with subscribing or purchasing libraries will be able to access all SAGE products including over 645 scholarly and professional journals at no extra fee.

University libraries already support current students and scholars with access to online resources through both on-site and remote services. This new license will extend this offering to alumni via secure authentication, with alumni being authorised by their institutions. Libraries will have the option to opt in to this new license on renewing current subscriptions for 2013.

“SAGE is strongly committed to helping libraries to serve their communities by delivering access to quality content.” remarked Stephen Barr, President SAGE International. “There is an untapped opportunity here to support those who leave academia but remain keenly interested in research and scholarship via their academic libraries. Librarians remain at the heart of the dissemination of research support within their institutions, and this firmly supports their role in enabling life-long learning.”

Nicky Whitsed, Director of Library Services at The Open University remarked, “We warmly welcome the extension of SAGE licences to embrace alumni and hope that other publishers will extend their licences in this way. This is an important development that supports our wish to foster continuing links with our alumni.”

SAGE begins Publishing World Future Review

SAGE has been chosen by the World Future Society to publish its journal, the World Future Review (WFR), beginning in early 2013.

WFR aims to further the study of future trends and better societal alternatives for researchers and practitioners alike. Its mission is to help people to live a more sustainable lifestyle by promoting research that fairly evaluates the outcomes of existing policies in multiple fields, assesses techniques for studying future issues, and allows for the exchange of futures-relevant information among different cultures.

The articles published in WFR encapsulate the research of multiple disciplines from a futures perspective including sociology, political science, economics, management, and other social sciences.

“Our goal at WFR is to pair the quality of a peer-reviewed professional journal with an innovative spirit of inquiry that will encourage qualified contributors to offer forward-looking theories and interpretations,” stated WFR Executive Editor Tim Mack. “Because we view the future as inherently unknowable in detail, we believe that every option humanity faces deserves to be considered fairly and its merits evaluated with professional care and scholarly objectivity. No topic falls entirely outside our field, and no finding logically arrived at and clearly expressed will ever be rejected out of hand as too implausible or threatening to interest WFR readers.”

“Publishing research in the political science, economics, management, and social science disciplines, World Future Review is a great fit for SAGE and will add even more depth to our journals collection,” said Bob Howard, SAGE’s executive director of US journals. “Its emphasis on future policy and societal transformation adds a unique perspective to these disciplines and is an important outlet for research that investigates how social, economic and technological developments can shape the future.”

World Future Review is now accepting manuscripts from professionals across the globe. For more information, click here.
