EDP Sciences signs a new five-year National Open Access Agreement in France

After a successful first, five-year term, the partners unanimously renew the agreement with EDP Sciences continuing to provide the publishing services

The partners of the “Accord national pour l’accès ouvert en France” (National Open Access Agreement in France) are delighted to announce that they have renewed the agreement for a further five-year term until 31 December 2026. The Ministère de l’Enseignement supérieur et de la Recherche (the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research – MESR), the Couperin consortium, the Agence bibliographique de l’enseignement supérieur (Abes) and EDP Sciences confirm they will continue to work closely to support open access publication of French research.

The Subscribe-to-Open (S2O) open access model plays a more prominent role this time and is quickly becoming an important pillar of the agreement. Several journals participating in the agreement are owned by learned societies which support S2O. For example, the Société de Mathématiques Appliquées et Industrielles (SMAI) with which EDP Sciences publishes a number of maths journals. Astronomy & Astrophysics is another high-profile S2O journal in the agreement and additional journals will also transition to S2O in 2023.

S2O reflects an emphasis on open access models that do not rely on article processing charges (APCs). EDP Sciences was an early adopter of S2O and is pleased to see it making a positive impact in a range of contexts.

“From our perspective, the success of the agreement is largely down to excellent teamwork and strong relationships with learned societies and higher education,” observed Anne Simoneau, Director of Business Development, EDP Sciences. “We have welcomed a number of new member institutions in 2022 and the agreement remains open to new members.”

Another notable aspect of the new agreement is unlimited open access publication (previously capped) for corresponding authors of member institutions. They can publish their work free of charge in 31 participating journals. (Members also enjoy full “read” access to a further 24 journals.) Without doubt, articles published under the agreement contribute to the growing proportion of open access content published by EDP Sciences. In 2021, this represented 65% of all publications. Journals which join EDP Sciences, such as the newly-arrived Journal of the European Optical Society-Rapid Publications, are also keen to join the agreement.

“Couperin is pleased to support academic libraries which support researchers to publish open access, free of charge via this agreement,” noted Grégory Colcanap, national coordinator at Couperin. “It’s good for everyone involved in French research.”

EDP Sciences is an international, open access publisher located in France with French origins. It is proud of both its heritage, reflected in myriad links to French learned societies, and its extensive international connections.

“MESR is delighted with the renewal of this agreement which is key to the Plan national pour la science ouverte,” commented Odile Contat, Chief of the Knowledge Dissemination and Documentation Department, MESR. “I am also happy that it offers EDP Sciences some financial stability. EDP Sciences is an influential open science advocate and complies with the international standards that are fundamental to our operations and future plans.”

“On behalf of Abes, I would like to underline the quality of the data delivered by EDP Sciences and the timely manner in which it is delivered,” said David Aymonin, Director of Abes. “It is satisfying to work with such professional partners.”

“EDP Sciences is thrilled by the confidence shown in it by MESR and the other partners, and by the central role it is playing in a decade of major investment in open access,” commented Agnès Henri, Managing Director, EDP Sciences. “We look forward to developing the agreement over the next five years so that it reaches its full potential and becomes an integral part of the research process in France.”

“Ground-breaking” bioethics publishing Platform leads way with open data policy before NIH 2023 mandate

Bioethics Open Research is the first publishing Platform to provide the bioethics field with a FAIR data policy for open access publishing. As the National Institutes of Health (NIH) – the largest funder for the bioethics field – moves to an open, FAIR data policy in 2023, Taylor & Francis have today (7th July) launched Bioethics Open Research to pave the way for bioethicists to publish with confidence in an open access format.

This one-of-a-kind Platform utilizes the rapid publishing model and technology of Taylor & Francis’ open research publishing arm, F1000, with a completely open peer review process across a wide range of different article types. Taylor & Francis and F1000 created the Platform to offer researchers across the interdisciplinary bioethics community a space to share and promote their work in an accessible and transparent way.

The American Journal of Bioethics (AJOB) is the first affiliate partner to launch a Gateway (a dedicated, branded publishing space) on the new Platform. This extends and diversifies the publishing opportunities offered by the AJOB journal portfolio, allowing all research outputs to be distributed quickly, openly and without barriers and in compliance with OA policy mandates from around the world.

Bioethics Open Research also features a new F1000 article type called Commentaries, providing an opportunity for authors to express and interpret ethical issues raised by articles on the Platform. These concentrated critical commentaries offer a clear and constructive debate, providing a valuable, easy to read report for those devoted to the ethics of medical research and practice. These Commentaries not only undergo open, post-publication peer review, but they also benefit from community review via the F1000 commenting functionality. This article type is new to F1000 and is being added to Bioethics Open Research to further tailor the Platform to the needs of the bioethics community.

Rebecca Lawrence, Managing Director, F1000 said:

“In developing this ground-breaking publishing Platform in partnership with Taylor & Francis, we open up a new range of publishing options for Bioethics researchers, enabling them to publish their work rapidly and shape the future of the discipline. With the support of our affiliate partners, we hope that Bioethics Open Research can be a leading publication within the field of bioethics that emphasizes the importance of distributing research quickly, openly and without barriers to researchers at all stages of their career.”

This joint initiative between Taylor & Francis and F1000 strengthens their shared goals of amplifying and democratizing research and is another firm step forward in expanding Taylor & Francis’ capabilities in open research and open access publishing.Bioethics Open Research will expand Taylor & Francis’ already extensive and high-quality portfolio in the bioethics discipline.

Todd Hummel, Global Publishing Director at Taylor & Francis said:

“We are delighted to once again be working with our colleagues at F1000 to build a new Platform dedicated to Bioethics research that focuses on openness, dialogue, and community. The new Platform will allow us to offer a publication experience that prioritizes the author journey while ensuring that everything from the underlying data to the peer review is open and accessible. Through the affiliation between Bioethics Open Research and The American Journal of Bioethics we are breaking new ground by providing expanded publication options to authors eager to engage with open research and furthering AJOB’s position as a leader in Bioethics publishing.”

Visit the Bioethics Open Research website for more information and find out how to submit your research: https://think.f1000.com/bioethicsopenresearch/. All researchers across bioethics and related fields are eligible to publish in Bioethics Open Research. Submissions from multi- and cross-disciplinary research projects are also welcome.

NIHR opens up research to “accelerate benefits for patients and public”

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) has launched a new research platform using the F1000 open access publishing model to help expedite the health benefits from publicly funded research, allowing researchers to quickly share and build on data and results.

NIHR Open Research allows researchers to rapidly publish research information, supporting transparency, reproducibility, and impact from publicly funded research. Any NIHR research across clinical evaluation, technology development, health services, public health and social care can be published on NIHR Open Research. This approach means that researchers can put all information from their studies in the public domain, increasing the discoverability and reach of their research.

Making all research findings rapidly available on NIHR Open Research will mean that other researchers can build on new ideas straight away and avoid the risk of duplication, so that new treatments and interventions for patients will become available quicker. Research published on the platform also includes links to all supporting data, allowing reanalyses, replication, and reuse, as well as making it easier for researchers to collaborate.

Professor Lucy Chappell, Chief Executive of the NIHR, said:

“Research is best undertaken openly, transparently, and with all aspects available, to reflect the collaborative, team science approach endorsed by the NIHR.

“NIHR Open Research ensures that all types of findings from NIHR funded and supported research can be made freely available. Researchers will now be able to learn from the many small steps made by their peers as well as the big ones, and promising findings can be accelerated into benefits for patients and the public.”

NIHR-funded researchers can publish a broad range of research outputs on the Platform from more traditional research articles through to incremental findings, case reports and even negative/null findings, thus supporting the entire life cycle of research.

F1000’s Managing Director, Rebecca Lawrence, commented:

“F1000 is delighted to partner with NIHR on this ground-breaking platform that has the opportunity to make a significant positive impact on health research in the UK. NIHR Open Research joins F1000’s other health and biomedical partnerships, including the Wellcome and Irish Health Research Board, and furthers our founding principles of empowering researchers and accelerating the publication of research for the public good.

“F1000’s unique publishing and open review model ensures rigour and quality of research while bringing greater clarity to the fundamentals behind the research itself, showing how scrutiny and analysis is part and parcel of how research progresses, helping address public misconceptions and mistrust about scientific research.”

NIHR has a long-standing commitment to ensuring that NIHR-funded research findings are discoverable and reusable by all. For example, NIHR is the world’s first health research funder to publish comprehensive accounts of its commissioned research within its own publicly and permanently available journals via the NIHR Journals Library

Together, NIHR Open Research and the NIHR Journals Library ensure that findings from all NIHR-funded and supported research are publicly available, which, along with NIHR’s new open access policy that came into place this month, widen and enhance NIHR’s commitment to open access. The new threaded publication model introduced by the NIHR Journals Library will bring together relevant articles published on NIHR Open Research with other articles published in the NIHR Journals Library and elsewhere, to collate a full account of individual NIHR-funded research projects.

Professor Christian Mallen, a member of the NIHR Open Research Advisory Board and an NIHR Research Professor, said:

“It is critical that research is easily accessible and available to all. Only then can we start to join together the different parts of the jigsaw that will allow us to improve outcomes for patients.”

Prof Mallen, who is also National Director of the NIHR School for Primary Care Research, added:

“All NIHR researchers can now use this exciting new Platform to share any type of finding from their research, making their work visible not only to peers and potential collaborators but also to health and care professionals, policy makers, patients, and service users, increasing the reach and potential impact of their research”.

Clarivate Names World’s Leading Journals with the 2022 Journal Citation Reports

Clarivate Plc (NYSE:CLVT), a global leader in providing trusted information and insights to accelerate the pace of innovation, today released the 2022 update to its annual Journal Citation Reports (JCR)™. The annual JCR release enables the research community to evaluate the world’s high-quality academic journals using a range of indicators, descriptive data and visualizations. The reports are used extensively by academic publishers across the globe to understand the scholarly impact of their journals relative to their field and promote them to the research community.

The JCR is based on 2021 data compiled from the Web of Science Core Collection™, the leading collection of quality journals, books and conference proceedings in the world’s largest publisher-neutral global citation database. Publications are evaluated by a global team of in-house editors at Clarivate using rigorous selection criteria. The data from selected content are then carefully curated to ensure accuracy in the JCR metrics, together with a wide body of descriptive data. These insights enable researchers, publishers, editors, librarians and funders to explore the key drivers of a journal’s value for diverse audiences.

COVID-19 continues to influence every aspect of scholarly publishing, just as it has affected every aspect of society

Dr Nandita Quaderi, Editor-in-Chief & Vice President Editorial, Web of Science said: “Through the carefully selected and curated data within the Journal Citation Reports, we can fully appreciate and understand the enormous impact of the academic community’s rapid response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“As researchers explored the origins, spread and ramifications of the virus, working at speed to create new therapies and vaccines, we see this reflected in the trusted insights contained in the annual JCR.  The effects of this pandemic will continue to be seen in the literature and citation impact for decades, particularly under the lens of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 3 on Health and Wellbeing. We are proud to support the research community and the UN SDGs with expertly curated data that informs decisions and helps them accelerate the pace of innovation.”

This year’s release sees continued notable increases in citation impact for journals in the fields of general medicine, critical care, public health, infectious diseases, immunology and basic biomedical sciences

  • This year The Lancet‘s Journal Impact Factor™ (JIF) of 202.731 has moved it to the #1 position in the general & internal medicine category, overtaking the New England Journal of Medicine, which has been the top-ranked title in that category since the first release of the JCR 45 years ago. Of the 10 articles with the highest citation count in 2021, three appeared in The Lancet. All three are directly related to the characterization and treatment of COVID-19.
  • This year Nature earns the distinction of being the first ever journal to accumulate more than one million total citations in one year. Nature published 16 items with over 500 JIF citations – of which 12 items were COVID-19 related.
  • Seven journals had JIFs of more than 100 for the first time, all of which published high quantities of COVID-19 related research. These are the Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet, Lancet Respiratory Medicine, Nature Reviews Drug Discovery, Nature Reviews Immunology, Nature Reviews Molecular Cell Biology and the New England Journal of Medicine.

Upholding research integrity and a new type of citation distortion

To support objectivity in journal selection and the integrity of the reports, Clarivate has suppressed three journals from the JCR (without presumption or accusation of wrong doing), representing 0.01% of the journals listed. Clarivate monitors and excludes journals that demonstrate anomalous citation behavior including where there is evidence of excessive journal self-citation and/or citation stacking. The methodology and parameters for the effect of journal self-citation on JCR metrics were updated in 2020 to better account for discipline norms. The suppression of a journal from the JCR does not equate to a de-listing from the Web of Science Core Collection.

In addition, this year the editorial integrity team at Clarivate identified a new type of anomalous citation behavior: self stacking. This is where the journal contains one or more documents with citations that are highly concentrated to the JIF numerator of the title itself. This is the first year we have formally defined the criteria for self-stacking suppression, and as such we have made the decision to issue a warning to six journals rather than suppress the journal’s JIF. Going forward, continued journal self-stacking will result in suppression of JIF.

Clarivate continuously reviews content with the goal of developing additional screening for distortions of the JIF.

Key facts from the 2021 data:

  • The Journal Citation Reports contains more than 21,000 journals, from 254 research categories and 114 countries. This includes:
  • 12,800 science journals
  • 6,600 social science journals
  • 3,000 arts and humanities journals
  • Almost 13,000 journals have at least one gold open access publication
  • More than 5,300 journals publish all of their content via open access
  • 192 journals received a Journal Impact Factor for the first time

Each journal profile in the JCR provides a rich array of journal intelligence metrics and allows users to filter by category and rank. These include:

  • The Journal Citation Indicator, which represents the average category-normalized citation impact for papers published in the prior three-year period. All journals in the JCR are eligible to receive this metric as of 2021
  • The Immediacy Index, which measures how frequently the journal’s content is cited within the same year as publication;
  • The journal’s rank in category, determined by Journal Impact Factor, expressed as a percentile;
  • Cited half-life, which is the median age, in years, of items in the journal that were cited during the JCR year; and
  • The Journal Impact Factor, which is given to journals in SCIE and SSCI, and which scales the citations received to recent content by a measure of the size of the journal’s scholarly output.

In addition, the Journal Citation Reports include descriptive data such as open access content, top contributing institutions and regions.

For a more detailed explanation of this year’s release, please see our blog.

“The acquisition of RPI is a perfect addition to Karger and fully supports our strategy. It gives us the opportunity to expand our publishing business and offer more creative formats. It brings us closer to our goal of communicating science beyond the traditional journal article to a broader audience, thereby connecting the various stakeholders in health sciences,” says Daniel Ebneter, CEO at Karger Publishers.

Gabriella Karger, Chairwoman of the Board of Directors at Karger Publishers adds that: “RPI’s slogan – ’Collaborate. Disseminate. Engage’ – is another way of saying ’Connecting and Advancing Health Sciences’, which is our claim at Karger.
