The “Anywhere Article” Launched Across Wiley Online Library

John Wiley & Sons, Inc., has announced the launch of its next generation enhanced HTML article, the “Anywhere Article”, which puts readability, interaction, and portability at the heart of the user experience. TheAnywhere Article launched across Wiley Online Library today.

“The communities we serve are as diverse as the research we publish and the Anywhere Article reflects that, because research is no longer restricted to the laboratory or the university library; portability must be an essential component of the user experience,” said Phillip Carpenter, Vice President & Managing Director, Research Communications, Wiley.

Until now, options for downloading and viewing journal research have often been restricted to flat HTML or PDF formats. Based on extensive user testing and feedback to ensure the Anywhere Article reflects user needs, Wiley’s new enhanced HTML offers a highly interactive and portable alternative.

Using the latest HTML5 technology, the Anywhere Article flows intelligently into different screen sizes, from desktops and tablets to mobile phones, automatically resizing the content and accompanying functionality to give the optimal viewing experience on any device.

A streamlined layout and design removes superfluous information to enable the reader to scan the clean page for the most important data, before delving further into the research when needed.

The interactive sidebar offers easy access to citations without leaving the context of each reference.  Similarly, the figure viewer allows readers to browse an article’s full set of figures and quickly navigate directly to each figure’s corresponding content in the paper.

The enhanced HTML article will be enabled in participating journals across Wiley Online Library which, comprising of over 1,500 journals, is the world’s broadest and deepest multidisciplinary collection of online resources.

Additional features and functionalities will continue to be added over the coming months as the HTML article evolves from its traditional online form into a reading experience that takes advantage of emerging technologies.

“Our research shows that 65% of users prefer to download a PDF, rather than use standard HTML articles”, said Todd Toler, Vice President, Digital Product Management. “Following conversations with our communities which identified the need for the Anywhere Article, we believe our enhanced HTML can offer both the portability and readability of the PDF, while opening up new ways to improve the user experience.”

Comments and suggestions about the Anywhere Article are welcomed on the feedback page or you can join the conversation on Twitter using the hashtag #AnywhereArticle.

Thomson Reuters Collaborates with ULisboa to Evaluate its Global Research Impact

The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals, today announced a collaboration with ULisboa, a merger of the University of Lisbon and Technical University of Lisbon, to demonstrate the efficacy and global impact of its scientific research.

In July 2013, University of Lisbon and Technical University of Lisbon merged, becoming the largest Portuguese higher education institution, now known as ULisboa. ULisboa is using the trusted indicators of Thomson Reuters InCitesTM, the company’s flagship, web-based research evaluation tool, to measure the institutions’ combined research output and impact, monitor trends, and benchmark its performance against peers at the individual, departmental and global levels. The initiative has already uncovered that ULisboa is globally excelling in agricultural sciences, space science, physics and engineering research.

The strategic relationship between Thomson Reuters and ULisboa supports the University’s plans to analyze its newly integrated framework and develop new research strategies, retain talent and identify new opportunities for collaboration through InCites indicators, which provide analytics on authors, journals and fields, as well as connections to the proprietary university research management and profiling systems for full workflow integration.

“The University de Lisbon (ULisboa) is a major player in Portugal, Iberia and Ibero-American higher education,” said Professor Rogério Gaspar, vice-rector of University of Lisbon. “There is tremendous potential for interdisciplinary collaboration within our new, integrated structure, making our university one of the potentially fastest growing universities. ULisboa crosses interdisciplinary knowledge areas and competencies with integrated platforms from arts and humanities, law and public policies, and social sciences, to higher and differentiated technologies in engineering, information and communication technologies, as well as health, marine sciences, agro-food, business and management.”

InCites is a customized, web-based evaluation tool that enables universities, funding bodies and policy makers to analyze their research productivity and compare their output against that of their peers. The solution provides normalized metrics for repeatable analysis of outcomes, cross-regional impacts, discipline comparisons and standardized, accurate reviews for promotion and tenure processes. InCites can also serve as a support solution in ongoing quality assurance activities

“The expanded University of Lisbon recognizes the growing need to measure performance within its new framework by analyzing and promoting the impact of its research,” said Gordon Macomber, managing director of Thomson Reuters Scholarly and Scientific Research. “We are pleased to work with the university by providing the necessary tools to help establish its presence on top of the latest global research trends, while improving the global impact and performance of its efforts.”

Agreement between EBSCO Information Services and Maruzen Adds Japanese eBooks to EBSCO Discovery Service

eBook metadata from Maruzen Company Ltd., a leading provider of books, journals and electronic content for universities and libraries in Japan, will be searchable via EBSCO Information Service’s (EBSCO) robust and comprehensive discovery service, EBSCO Discovery Service (EDS). The agreement between EBSCO and Maruzen will allow metadata from Maruzen’s eBook Library to be added to EDS.

The Maruzen metadata offers a range of eBook content encompassing everything from the humanities and social sciences to science, engineering and medicine and will be a valuable resource for EDS users looking for the latest content on Japanese-language materials. By accessing the content via EBSCO Discovery Service’s intuitive and easy-to-use discovery layer platform, users are able to greatly expand their searches as well as maximize their library collection.

Maruzen Company Ltd. is part of a growing list of publishers and other content partners that are taking part in EDS to bring more visibility to their content. Partners include the world’s largest scholarly journal & book publishers including Elsevier, Wiley Blackwell, Springer Science & Business Media, Taylor & Francis Informa, Sage Publications, Nature Publishing, IEEE, ACM and thousands of others. Partners also include content providers, such as LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters (Web of Science), JSTOR, ARTstor, Credo Reference, Encyclopedia Britannica, World Book, ABC-CLIO, The HathiTrust and many others.

EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box—searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.

EBSCO Discovery Service is quickly becoming the discovery selection for many libraries (www.ebscohost.com/discovery/eds-news), and an obvious partner for content providers. Because the service builds on the foundation provided by the EBSCOhost® platform, libraries gain a full user experience for discovering their collections/OPAC—which is not typical in the discovery space. Further still, in the many universities and other libraries where EBSCOhost is the most-used platform for premium research, users are not asked to change their pathways or habits for searching. There’s simply more to discover on the familiar EBSCOhost platform, and the same can be said for library administrators who can leverage their previous work with EBSCOadmin™.

Blackboard and Pearson Collaborate in Effort to Better Support K-12 Schools

Blackboard Inc. and Pearson, two of the largest providers of technology and services to K-12 education, today announced a collaboration that will improve the integration and flow of data between their complementary K-12 solutions, in direct response to requests from educators.

Royal Society to Launch OA Journal

The Royal Society today announced the launch ofRoyal Society Open Science, a new open-access journal that will publish papers from a variety of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines.

The move follows a trend in science publishing, illustrated just last week when the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), publisher of Science, announced the launch ofScience Advances, a broadly focused, online-only publication.

The Royal Society’s new journal will boast some non-traditional features, such as the option for submitting authors to request open peer review and the acceptance of manuscripts on studies that generated negative results.

Royal Society Open Science welcomes the submission of all high quality science including articles which may usually be difficult to publish elsewhere, for example, those that include negative findings,” the publisher noted in its announcement.

Also, just as papers declined for publication in Science and Science Translational Medicine will be considered for Science Advances, Royal Society Open Science will also consider manuscripts from other Royal Society titles, in addition to original submissions.

“The publishing model is continually evolving and it’s important that the Royal Society’s own journal offerings do so, too,” Sir Paul Nurse, Royal Society president, said in the announcement.

APEC to recognize ‘intelligent transportation’ innovator

APEC has opened the nomination period for the APEC Science Prize for Innovation, Research, and Education, also known as the ASPIRE Prize, sponsored by John Wiley & Sons, Inc., and Elsevier, which in 2014 will honor a young scientist whose work has made an outstanding contribution to ‘intelligent transportation.’

The theme reflects APEC member economies’ focus on improving regional connectivity further during China’s year as APEC chair, including joint work on infrastructure development and the promotion of sustainable transportation solutions.

It was selected in recognition of the bigger influence transportation is exerting on economic growth, environmental protection and people’s livelihoods as more APEC economies face rapid urbanization.

“Infrastructure needs are becoming more apparent and must be addressed to support increasing flows of goods and people that are crisscrossing the Pacific Rim,” added Dr Alan Bollard, the APEC Secretariat’s Executive Director. “Joint research within the region is helping to improve infrastructure planning, construction and management to create more efficient supply chains, and in ways that take economic and environmental considerations into greater account.”

The ASPIRE Prize celebrates collaboration between APEC researchers, universities, research centers and businesses that fosters ideas and technologies which drive more robust, integrated and sustainable economic activity. Nominees are evaluated based on the merits of their research, as validated by scholarly publication, and collaboration with scientists from other APEC economies.

This year’s ASPIRE Prize spotlights developments in areas such as civil engineering, intelligent transport systems, traffic engineering and urban planning. The goal is to encourage innovation that is vital to ensuring better connectivity in the APEC region.

Asian economies will require about USD8 trillion in infrastructure development for the period between 2010 and 2020 alone, according to the Asian Development Bank.

“’Intelligent transportation solutions will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of regional connectivity and promote smart, clean and low-carbon urbanization,” said Dr. Agus Hoetman, Chair of the APEC Policy Partnership for Science, Technology, and Innovation which administers the ASPIRE Prize.

The award will be presented later this year. It is sponsored by Wiley and Elsevier, two publishers of scholarly scientific knowledge. The winner will receive USD25,000 in prize money.

“The 2014 ASPIRE Prize recognizes scientists from the APEC region who are working together on innovative solutions and systems to solve transportation and urbanization challenges,” said Stephen M. Smith, Wiley’s President and CEO.

“The award nominations that are submitted as APEC China 2014 gets underway will provide a window into how young researchers are contributing to the region’s growth and connectivity,” concluded YoungSuk Chi, Chairman of Elsevier.

Each of APEC’s 21 member economies may nominate one individual under 40 years of age for the 2014 ASPIRE Prize.

IEEE statement on the open evolution of internet standards

The open, universal and inclusive nature of the Internet is not a natural phenomenon. It is a major achievement that has to be actively defended and fostered. In particular, IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) considers the integrity of the underlying technical standards, including security protocols, to be the lifeblood of the Internet. Any intentional weakening of such standards is a very serious and politically unacceptable violation of personal and professional ethics, and poses a major threat to the future of the Internet. A universally open, fully transparent and broadly consensual standards development process, as exemplified by the OpenStand external link principles, is the solution to many of these challenges.

By contrast, fragmentation of the Internet infrastructure, including regionalization of its norms and standards, does not provide the answer, but rather constitutes a further threat against the universal character of the Internet. In particular, we explicitly support the position of the IEEE 802 leaders regarding security protocols related to IEEE 802 standards.

Finally, we would like to use this occasion to announce that IEEE, with its unique position and potential among vast, global communities of scientists, engineers and experts in all pertinent technical fields, is planning to significantly augment its global engagement in the Internet arena. Meanwhile, for those who are interested to learn anything related to the internet, they may want to read pages such as the one about EnableIT brand.
