EBSCO Publishing and University Library Online in Russia partner to add educational and scientific literature to EDS

EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) and University Online Library in Russia have developed a new partnership allowing content from University Online Library to be searched within EBSCO Discovery Service™(EDS). The agreement will add e-book metadata from the University Online Library collection into the Base Index of EDS, the most comprehensive and robust collection of metadata from the best content sources.

University Online Library is an electronic library that provides access to the most sought-after materials of leading publishers. The metadata content that will be added to EDS represents the largest Russian e-book collection available and is comprised of educational and scientific material specifically designed for students, graduate students, teachers and professionals.

University Online Library’s comprehensive collection of e-books span many different subject areas including humanities, history, economics, philosophy, psychology, sociology, political science, economics, as well as masterpieces of Russian and world classics. Database resources include educational books, directories, dictionaries, encyclopedias, interactive tests, maps and lecture notes.

University Library Online is part of a growing list of publishers and other content partners that are taking part in EDS to bring more visibility to their content. Partners include the world’s largest scholarly journal and book publishers including Elsevier, Wiley Blackwell, Springer Science & Business Media, Taylor & Francis Informa, Sage Publications, and thousands of others. Partners also include content providers, such as LexisNexis, Thomson Reuters (Web of Science), JSTOR, ARTstor, Credo Reference, World Book, ABC-CLIO, and many others.

The EDS Base Index represents content from approximately 20,000 providers (and growing), which accounts for more than 350,000 publications from the world’s top publishers and information providers. However, because EDS is a custom solution, the complete index to materials for any given customer may be expanded greatly beyond the coverage referenced for the Base Index. In terms of depth of coverage for publications in the EBSCO Discovery Service Base Index, content extends back to the 15th century, and in some cases, even earlier. The inclusion of custom catalogs, repositories and other resources may certainly further extend the dates of archival coverage for a given institution.

EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means ofaccessing all of that content from a single search box—searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.

EBSCODiscovery Serviceis quickly becoming the discovery selection for many libraries (www.ebscohost.com/discovery/eds-news), and an obvious partner for content providers. Because the service builds on the foundation provided by the EBSCOhost® platform, libraries gain a full user experience for discovering their collections/OPAC—which is not typical in the discovery space. Further still, in the many universities and other libraries where EBSCOhost is the most-used platform for premium research, users are not asked to change their pathways or habits for searching. There’s simply more to discover on the familiar EBSCOhost platform, and the same can be said for library administrators who can leverage their previous work with EBSCOadmin™.

OCLC announces the first phase launch of Bookmark Your Library

Bookmark Your Library is now open to all Librarians in the UK for review. The website is a collaborative effort between OCLC and several leading library organisations in the UK, which provides a gateway to all the content and services that libraries have to offer new and existing users. By giving librarians exclusive early access to the site, OCLC intend to elicit their feedback to refine Bookmark Your Library, ahead of a full national public launch early in the 2013.

The call is for librarians to log onto www.bookmarkyourlibrary.org.uk, review the website and then provide feedback to OCLC about functionality, content and features. The website offers several social media and communications channels for libraries to give comment, pledge support and help shape the service by making suggestions about how the site should evolve.

Bookmark Your Library is about boosting visibility and usage of public library resources and services by moving them collectively online, and making them accessible via a single digital presence. Bookmark Your Library will be home to FABLibraries, the UK’s only public library national catalogue, which is based on the holdings of UnityUK subscribers. Users will also be able to use the site to access the Enquire digital reference service and chat online with a librarian to answer questions or support learning, at any time of the day or night. Bookmark Your Library will help people to find out about local library events, become a member, and provide them with the information they need to develop skills and pursue interests through their library service. And, they will be able to do all of this for free.

OCLC has worked with a number of key stakeholders in the formation of Bookmark Your Library to meet the diverse needs of the UK public. Groups including the Society of Chief Librarians, Arts Council England, The Reading Agency, The Combined Regions, The Collections Trust and the RNIB, have all worked closely with OCLC to make Bookmark Your Library as relevant and inclusive as possible.

In a statement, also released today, the Society of Chief Librarians affirmed its support for the initiative and discussed how Bookmark Your Library is aligned with its National Digital Promise for public libraries in Wales, England and Northern Ireland. “It is essential that all public library authorities deliver digital services alongside traditional ones. These services should be accessible to all regardless of ability.” Explains Janene Cox, SCL President: “As part of our Digital Promise, we have worked with OCLC to define Bookmark Your Library, which gives libraries a 24/7 virtual presence and people a website for common access to local and national digital services, such as an electronic catalogue of resources for loan. We will continue this work with OCLC to ensure that future releases of Bookmark Your Library move us even closer to our objectives and we hope that our members will help us in this endeavour.”

Robin Murray, OCLC Vice President, Global Product Management, adds: “The release of Bookmark Your Library to the library community is a crucial milestone in this ongoing project. Of course as part of the process we will be consulting members of the public themselves to understand what they would like Bookmark Your Library to be, but many will be unaware of the potential of what public libraries have to offer. Librarians are the experts; they couple users with services and resources constantly. It’s that knowledge we need to ensure the success of Bookmark your Library going forward.”

To be a part of Bookmark Your Library, please visit www.bookmarkyourlibrary.org.uk and use the site’s contact us form (www.bookmarkyourlibrary.org.uk/contact-us) to feedback. You can also get in touch via Facebook at www.facebook.com/bookmarkyourlibrary or Twitter at @bookmarkyourlib to let us know what you think, and what you believe the UK public would like to see included on the site.

American Chemical Society launches major new resource on climate science

The American Chemical Society (ACS), the world’s largest scientific society, today launched a new web-based resource to enhance understanding and communication of the science underpinning global climate change. Intended for ACS’ more than 164,000 members and others, the American Chemical Society Climate Science Toolkit is available at www.acs.org/climatescience.

The project, more than a year in development, was one of the major initiatives that Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, Ph.D., ACS president, put forth for his year in office. Shakhashiri, the William T. Evjue Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, described the toolkit as a unique resource, with a sharp focus on the scientific concepts that determine Earth’s climate.

“The ACS Climate Science Toolkit fills a need for education, and equips scientists with the information and other resources necessary to develop a robust intellectual structure to communicate on this key topic,” said Shakhashiri. “Climate change affects everyone and everything on Earth, and ranks as one of the greatest global challenges of the early 21st century.”

Shakhashiri explained that the ACS is among the major scientific organizations with position statements acknowledging the reality of climate change and recommending action. The ACS policy statement mentions that people need a basic understanding of climate science in order to make informed personal decisions. And it describes climate change education for the public as “essential.” Not explicit in the statement, however, is the responsibility of individual ACS members to take active roles in this education process as both scientists and citizens.

“Scientist-citizens must use their expertise and credibility as scientists ― as the ACS Mission Statement expresses so eloquently ― ‘…for the benefit of Earth and its people,’” Shakhashiri added. “Recruiting individual scientists to take on this responsibility requires encouragement and exhortation. It also requires providing convenient access to reliable tools for doing so.”

The ACS Climate Science Toolkit discusses greenhouse gases, how the Earth’s heating mechanism works, how the vibrational energy from molecules changes into translational kinetic energy and how having a green house heater could help plants grown under artificial conditions. The toolkit also provides a package of “Climate Science Narratives” that can be adapted and personalized when scientists have the opportunity to speak about climate science to other audiences. Those may include students, schoolteachers, college and university faculty, industrial scientists and business leaders, civic and religious groups, professional science and educational organizations,
and elected public officials at all levels and in all branches of government.

Work on the toolkit began in 2011, when Shakhashiri formed the ACS Presidential Working Group on Climate Science, a panel of distinguished scientists and science communicators chaired by physical chemist and science educator Jerry A. Bell, Ph.D. The panel worked on two tasks. One was to develop a toolkit that ACS members and others could use for self-education on climate science, to understand the fundamental chemical and physical processes that determine Earth’s climate. The second was an ongoing task of developing strategies for using the toolkit in communicating about climate change to other audiences.

This week’s edition of Chemical & Engineering News, ACS’ weekly newsmagazine, contains a Comment article http://cenm.ag/climatescience in which Shakhashiri discusses the toolkit and its importance.

Members of the working group:

Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, Ph.D., William T. Evjue Distinguished Chair for the Wisconsin Idea, the University of Wisconsin-Madison

World Stem Cell Report 2012 published by Regenerative Medicine

As scientists, policymakers and advocates from around the world come together in Florida for the 2012 World Stem Cell Summit, the Genetics Policy Institute and Future Medicine announce the publication of this year’s World Stem Cell Report as a supplement to leading journal Regenerative Medicine.

The World Stem Cell Report is free to download at http://www.future-science-group.com/m/435.

The World Stem Cell Summit brings together some of the world’s brightest minds, working together to translate stem cell research into cures. In order to extend and capitalize on that knowledge, the Genetics Policy Institute publishes an annual snapshot of the field – the World Stem Cell Report – released at the World Stem Cell Summit each year.

After the success of last year’s collaboration, the World Stem Cell Report is again being published as a supplement to the peer-reviewed journal Regenerative Medicine and benefits from the journal’s high standards in content and presentation, including rigorous peer review, indexing on MEDLINE, Scopus and ISI, and full color illustrations throughout.

Bernard Siegel, Executive Director of Genetics Policy Institute said, “We are proud to partner again with the truly superb editorial team at Regenerative Medicine to maintain the high standard of excellence of the peer-reviewed World Stem Cell Report. This collaboration allows the Report to reach an elite global audience. We will continue to provide an array of specialized articles offering unique insights of leading policy-makers, regulators and experts in law, ethics, advocacy, industry and philanthropy from countries, regions and states. The Report provides a global framework to understand how the intersection of ethics, law, economics and society impact the advancement of regenerative medicine and the quest for cures.”

The theme of this year’s World Stem Cell Report focuses on a key goal of both the World Stem Cell Summit and Regenerative Medicine: ‘Closing the translational gap’ between the lab and the clinic to bring new therapies to patients safely and efficiently. With that goal in mind, the Senior Editor of Regenerative Medicine, Professor Chris Mason, and Executive Director of the Genetics Policy Institute, Bernard Siegel, have chosen a range of topics to reflect the cutting edge of stem cells and regenerative medicine, from preclinical research to the latest clinical trials.

Highlights include:

• Research Updates from top scientists give accessible overviews on the current state of research in their field, including Camillo Ricordi (University of Miami) and Roger Barker (University of Cambridge).

• Martin McGlynn, President and CEO of one of the most talked about stem cell companies of the year, Stem Cells, Inc., shares the latest news from their clinical trials

• Todd McAllister (Cytograft) and Gil van Bokkelen (Athersys/Alliance for Regenerative Medicine) give their differing views on a topic that has caused much controversy this year: regulation of autologous stem cell therapies.

• A series of Global Updates, highlighting the key researchers and institutions in countries around the world, this year featuring USA, Canada, UK, Sweden and Brazil.

Elisa Manzotti, Publisher at Future Medicine said “We are delighted to be partnering with the World Stem Cell Summit to bring the World Stem Cell Report to a global audience. Our editorial team have worked with Bernie Siegal and the Genetics Policy Institute to ensure that the World Stem Cell Report delivers concise, timely and actionable intelligence to our readers. In renewing our platinum media sponsorship of the World Stem Cell Summit, we recognize the Summit’s important role in bringing together leaders from around the globe to chart the future of regenerative medicine.”

The World Stem Cell Report will be available to download in full as a free interactive PDF at: http://www.future-science-group.com/m/435.

IEEE Computer Society Launches Open-Access Journal

etting the pace for providing authors with new options for publishing, the IEEE Computer Society has launched a new open-access journal on emerging topics in computing.

IEEE Transactions on Emerging Topics in Computing (TETC) publishes papers on emerging aspects of computer science, computer engineering, information technology, software, and applications not currently covered by other IEEE transactions. The online-only journal will publish preprints online before the first issue appears in July 2013.

TETC is one of several IEEE open-access journals being developed in response to the academic community’s calls for articles to be freely available to the public. With open access, readers can download articles without paying subscription fees. Instead, authors pay a fee to publish their articles. The open-access author fee will be $1,350 per article.

“The IEEE Computer Society is committed to providing the computer research community with the best possible venues for dissemination top work,” said Tom Conte, IEEE Computer Society First Vice President and Vice President for Publications. “The reputation of the Computer Society’s publications is second to none, and TETC will be no exception. We are extremely excited about the launch of TETC, and all indications are it will be embraced by contributors, researchers, and computer professionals.”

The IEEE Computer Society also provides authors the option of publishing open-access papers in any of its other journals. Any article designated as “open access” in these journals is automatically made publicly accessible, at no charge to the user. Other articles in the journal remain available only to paid subscribers.

Publication of high-quality, peer-reviewed, financially sustainable journals remains an essential part of IEEE’s mission. For more information on open access, visit ieee.org.
