Elsevier Launches New Open Access Journal – Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis

Elsevier, a world-leading provider of scientific, technical and medical information products and services announces the launch of a new, international, open access journal, Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis.

Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis provides a forum for the rapid publication of short, structured case studies in engineering failure analysis and will form an essential compendium for practitioners in this field. The scope of the journal will include case studies of component failures in mechanical, civil, aerospace, mining, oil and gas, medical, electrical, transportation, power generation, process and forensic engineering, although failure of engineering components in other disciplines will also be considered.

The Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Richard Clegg said of the launch, “Like medical practitioners, most failure analysts use a combination of a deep understanding of science and knowledge of past experience to provide an optimal solution to their challenges. We hope to develop the journal into an indispensible body of experience in engineering failures, which will assist experienced and novice engineering failure analysts to more quickly come to an understanding of the causes of the failures which they are studying.”

Dr. George Pantazopoulos from ELKEME Hellenic Research Centre for Metals S.A., Athens, Greece, first author of the first paper submitted and accepted for publication in the journal, said, “The journal focuses on real failure analysis case studies in engineering applications across the industry and as an open access journal it provides a channel for better exchange of failure analysis experience among engineers from all industrial sectors. Rapid publication allows faster sharing of such experience for improved future practice.”

Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis is the first title in a series of open access journals called ‘Case Studies in …’ to be launched by Elsevier within the field of engineering. Journals in the series will all follow the article based publishing model which allows for immediate publication of final version of a paper without waiting for other articles to be ready to compile a full issue.

The first articles of Case Studies in Engineering Failure Analysis are available to view online on ScienceDirect.

LWW and Amirsys Publish “Osborn’s Brain,” the Much-Anticipated New Neuroradiology Text By World-Renowned Author Ann Osborn

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), part of Wolters Kluwer Health, together with Amirsys Publishing, Inc., today announced publication of Osborn’s Brain: Imaging, Pathology, and Anatomy, the much-anticipated new text from world-renowned neuroradiologist and author Dr. Anne G. Osborn. Ever since she published her award-winning 1993 classic, Diagnostic Neuroradiology—the best-selling neuroradiology text of all-time—her admirers around the world have pleaded for a “new Osborn” teaching text. Osborn’s Brain promises to be the new gold standard of its field.

Written for neurologists, neuroradiologists, and neurosurgeons, Osborn’s Brain is designed to help residents, fellows, and practitioners think logically about the various pathologies that can affect the brain. The new 1,300-page volume weaves the critical aspects of brain imaging together with spectacular pathology examples and relevant anatomy. Osborn’s Brain contains more than 3,200 high-resolution radiologic and pathologic images as well as detailed, full-color medical illustrations—all paired with clearly written explanatory text.

The format of Osborn’s Brain departs significantly from Osborn’s other recent publications. Rather than using bulleted text, Osborn returns to detailed prose of her earlier texts. Although she had said she would never write another prose-based text, according to Osborn, the prose format helps readers understand the reasoning behind the conclusions and makes the book an easy-to-read yet comprehensive learning resource. Furthermore, Osborn’s signature summary boxes are sprinkled throughout the text to highlight the most important points from each section and facilitate quick review.

“Instead of approaching imaging in the conventional manner—starting with congenital anomalies and proceeding through the spectrum of acquired disorders—I structured the book as a learning curriculum,” said Anne G. Osborn, author and University Distinguished Professor of Radiology at the University of Utah School of Medicine. “I start with the most immediate ‘must know’ topics, beginning with trauma, then move to a discussion of non-traumatic hemorrhage and vascular lesions. Presenting the most critical topics first gives quick access to what matters most.”

“Anne Osborn has a rare gift for taking a highly complex topic and making it visually appealing and easy to understand,” said Susan Driscoll, President and CEO, Wolters Kluwer Health, Professional & Education division. “In Osborn’s Brain, she strikes a chord again by presenting the most up-to-date look at brain pathologies in a way that both informs and exhilarates. This impressive new volume will resonate as well with first-year residents as it will with seasoned neuroradiologists.”

Anne G. Osborn, MD, is an internationally acclaimed teacher and lecturer, and author of several texts that are considered the definitive references in her field. She was the first recipient of RSNA’s Outstanding Educator Award. Cited as one of the “20 Most Influential” people in radiology by Diagnostic Imaging magazine, she was the first woman elected president of the American Society of Neuroradiology, the largest subspecialty society in radiology.

Available now, the hardbound Osborn’s Brain: Imaging, Pathology, and Anatomy comes with a companion eBook, accessible online with fully searchable text. Priced at $349, Osborn’s Brain can be purchased by visiting www.LWW.com/osbornsbrain. For more information, visit www.LWW.com.

Improving Customer Retention and Renewal Rates – An ACCUCOMS Report

Publishers need to focus on establishing a dialogue with their customers if they want to improve their retention and renewal rates. This is the main conclusion of a new report by ACCUCOMS, Improving Customer Retention and Renewal Rates. The report is based on a survey among publishers as well as feedback from libraries, and outlines several sales and marketing strategies publishers can use to identify potential cancellations and stimulate earlier renewals.

In September 2012, ACCUCOMS held a survey among society, academic, nonprofit and commercial publishers. The questions addressed sales and marketing priorities as well as subscription renewal trends. The survey found that in recent years, a quarter of subscribers (26%) had been renewing their subscriptions later in the renewal cycle. For 2012, more publishers expected subscription renewals to decrease (44%) than to stay the same (39%). The survey also found that publishers mainly use email newsletters and printed materials (38%) to reach out to customers. Feedback from libraries described longer decision-making processes and an increased focus on usage statistics.

In the report, ACCUCOMS recommends using the decision-making processes to establish a two-way conversation between publishers and their customers. Publishers need to focus on increasing product awareness and usage, improving product experiences and providing solutions for issues before they turn into reasons not to renew.

The report can be accessed and downloaded via the ACCUCOMS website:

Mendeley Institutional Edition expands its user base in Asia-Pacific region

Mendeley Institutional Edition powered by Swets (MIE), the web-based research analytics dashboard and social collaboration platform, has expanded its reach into the Asia–Pacific market and is being rolled out at the University of Nottingham Malaysia campus. This prestigious foreign campus of the University of Nottingham in the UK joins other institutions in the region, including Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Research Council (AFFRC) of Japan, in adopting the platform.

The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus library has a large international student base, necessitating a great degree of flexibility in the tools they use to conduct and manage their research. All libraries signing up for the MIE can roll out premium versions of Mendeley’s end-user platform to all researchers across their institution. MIE’s cloud-based solution has opened up new possibilities for the Campus’ end users to work and collaborate remotely, an important factor for the University.

“Mendeley Institutional Edition is just the right application for our researchers to connect to their resources, databases and journal citations anytime, anywhere,” says Ms Khan Quay Kin, Senior Librarian at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. “It supports access via multiple devices, across different platforms and browser environments. It is simple and intuitive to use and the web importer feature enables the citation of references within seconds!”

From the library point of view, keeping track of reading and publication trends among this diverse group was a huge bonus to the library. The insights provided by the tool will give the library a more central role in the research workflow undertaken across their institution and greater visibility of end-user behavior and how to refine the library collection to meet their changing needs.

During the implementation stage, Swets and Mendeley worked with the library to build a customized citation style that, although based on the Harvard system, was unique to this institution. This again demonstrates the flexibility of the system for our customers.

“We are delighted that The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus have chosen to add Mendeley Institutional Edition to their library portfolio,” says Debbie Dore, Chief Commercial Officer at Swets. “They serve as a clear example of the platform’s international appeal and highlight the fact that the data inherent within the platform can be of great value to all institutions, no matter their location.”

As more institutions adopt the platform, the value of such an integrated system becomes ever greater. The possibilities for further growth in the tool’s analytics capabilities and benchmarking are revealed as layers will be added to what is based on the one of the largest citation databases in existence.
