Getting the rights right: Speakers announced for next SPARC-ACRL forum

Presenters have been announced for “Getting the rights right for the future of scholarly communication,” a timely panel discussion hosted by SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and set for the upcoming meeting of the American Library Association (ALA) in Dallas, TX. The forum will be held Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Dallas Convention Center, room A201/202.

The potential for using the digital environment to accelerate scholarship depends not only on unfettered access to publications and data, but also – equally – on having the clearly stated rights to use and re-use the materials. Only with full re-use rights are we able to realize the true potential of Open Access to create new knowledge, build on earlier findings, and translate research for educational and commercial use.

This SPARC/ACRL forum will explore the troubles of getting the rights piece wrong and how we can unlock the future of scholarship and scholarly communication if we get the rights piece right. With brief presentations and plenty of opportunity for discussion, speakers will share the latest in rights-related developments and highlight ideas for libraries to help reshape this crucial piece in the scholarly communication puzzle and make sure the future is open. Presenters will include:

  • David Prosser, Executive Director, Research Libraries UK, on recent purchase negotiations.
  • Lisa Macklin, Director, Intellectual Property Rights Office of the Emory University Libraries, on the Georgia State University e-reserve case.
  •  Jon Voss, Historypin Strategic Partnerships Director, on linked data.
  • Greg Grossmeier, Education Technology and Policy Coordinator, Creative Commons, on the importance and potential of open licensing.
  • Wim Van der Stelt, Executive Vice President of Corporate Strategy for Springer, on changing practices within the commercial publishing sector.

Other publishers and forum participants will also be invited to share related updates and join in this engaging and informative discussion.

The forum will be held Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Dallas Convention Center, A201/202.

The ACRL Scholarly Communications Discussion Group, which offers a more intimate setting to explore issues that surface at the forum, will explore some of the ethical issues with getting rights right and Open Access and be held Sunday, January 22, 2012 from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM in the Sheraton Dallas Hotel, Majestic 05.

Separate registration for this event is not required. For further details on the forum, visithttp://www.arl.org/sparc/forum.

National Library of France Chooses EBSCO Discovery Service

Bibliothèque nationale de France (BNF), the National Library of France has selected EBSCO Discovery Service™ (EDS) as its library discovery solution. As a long time EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) customer, the National Library of France was pleased with EDS’s comprehensive index solution and ability to incorporate many of the library’s information resources. After looking at several discovery services, the librarians at BNF were confident that EDS was the best service to expose users to the national library’s collection — one of the largest and richest e-collection of any library worldwide.

BNF had been looking to modernize its aging information system and librarians were impressed with the impact EDS could have on the library — particularly the depth and breadth of coverage in the Base Index of EDS. Before looking at EDS, librarians had been unfamiliar with this type of comprehensive index. Demonstrations by EBSCO’s sales team made it clear that an index the size of EDS’s would be capable of pulling together content that might otherwise go undiscovered.

BNF Director of the Science and Technology section Hervé Colinmaire, says, “We were pleased with the index solution in EDS and feel that it will work well with our library. What interested us most in the EDS index solution is the capacity of the search engine to retrieve information at the smallest and deepest level of information.”

BNF’s information system consisted of many different layers of information without any integration. Colinmaire says EBSCO was the right fit to bring together BNF resources while providing easier access for the end user. “EDS provided our users the possibility to browse through a ‘jungle’ of resources dispatched in different tools and parts of our site. We think that our library will benefit greatly from EDS as we’re absolutely confident that the vast amount and range of our resources will be much better known and publicized.”

Colinmaire says other important factors in the decision to implement EDS as the discovery service at the National Library of France was the unique ability to incorporate French resources into EDS as well as licensed and full text databases. “We believe EDS was the right fit for our library because it provides the best coverage rate possible for our collection and the best opportunity to grow with our collection. We were also particularly interested in the capacity of EDS to give access to our French speaking resources allowing our patrons to access as much content as possible in one place.”

Future plans include the integration of EDS with the BNF OPAC to further expand the integrated one-stop search experience for users. EDS customers build upon the base index by adding metadata representing their own unique collections including their catalog (OPAC), databases, archival collections — using EDS as the base of an institution-specific discovery experience.

BNF also plans to also taking advantage of a number of the customizability optionsavailable within EDS to include value-added features to further create a unique discovery solution for the National Library of France. BNF is currently planning to create LibGuide widgets on the result list and to customize the EDS interface colors.

EBSCO Discovery Service creates a unified, customized index of an institution’s information resources, and an easy, yet powerful means of accessing all of that content from a single search box-searching made even more powerful because of the quality of metadata and depth and breadth of coverage.

The Base Index for EBSCO Discovery Service forms the foundation upon which each EDS subscribing library builds out its custom collection. Beginning with the Base Index, each institution extends the reach of EDS by adding appropriate resources including its catalog, institutional repositories, EBSCOhost and other databases, and additional content sources to which it subscribes. It is this combination that allows a single, comprehensive, custom solution for discovering the value of any library’s collection.

The EDS Base Index is comprised of metadata from the world’s foremost information providers. At present, the EDS Base Index represents content from approximately 20,000 providers in addition to metadata from another 70,000 book publishers. Although constantly growing, today the EDS Base Index provides metadata for nearly 50,000 magazines & journals, approximately 825,000 CDs & DVDs, nearly six million books, more than 100 million newspaper articles, more than 400,000 conference proceedings and hundreds of thousands of additional information sources from various source-types.

Jason S Gardner appointed Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter

Dr Jason S Gardner has been announced as the new Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter, a leading international publication in condensed matter physics.

Dr Gardner is currently a research scientist in experimental condensed matter physics at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, Gaithersburg and Indiana University, USA. He has already made an excellent contribution to the journal having been an advisory board member since 2005 and also serving on the journal’s executive board. Dr Gardner has published over 120 papers in the past 15 years and has spoken at over 65 worldwide conferences.

Dr Gardner’s extensive research background makes him a natural appointment to lead Journal of Physics: Condensed Matter. His primary research area is in the rapidly growing field of neutron scattering on magnetic model systems such as spin liquids, spin ice and low-dimensional systems.

He gained his first degree and PhD from Warwick University and his MSc from Keele University. He then worked as a postdoctoral researcher at McMaster University and Los Alamos. He was a staff scientist at the Chalk River Laboratory for five years before moving to the National Institute of Standards and Technology in 2001. Working closely with international colleagues, Dr Gardner has developed a program of materials synthesis, bulk characterization and facilities research. He is also a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.

Dr Gardner said of his appointment “It is a great honour but also a real challenge. The journal is doing well thanks to the work of my predecessors, Marshall Stoneham and David Ferry. As the new Editor-in-Chief, I hope to continue to improve still further the journal’s status in condensed matter science and look forward to reading a lot more outside my usual fields of interest.”

Dr Gardner takes over the role, as of 1 January 2012, from Professor David Ferry of Arizona State University, USA, who leaves the position after five years, having done an impressive job taking the publication forward. Under Professor Ferry’s guardianship the journal has achieved its highest ever Impact Factor (2.332) and the immediacy index is also at its highest ever level. His tenure has also seen the introduction of popular subject sections, a stricter refereeing policy and new online features (such as LabTalk ).

Professor Ferry said “I have thoroughly enjoyed my five-year posting as Editor-in-Chief. My special thanks are given to all the Editorial Board members and the team at IOP Publishing for their help and support, and also to the members of our various boards who have been so important as we have moved the journal forward. I would like to wish my successor, Dr Gardner, an enjoyable and successful tenure as Editor-in-Chief.”

CABI upgrades Research for Development portal with better search features

Researchers now have faster and easier access to information on development projects, thanks to an upgrade to the Department for International Development’s (DFID) website.

For the first time, research that had previously been communicated through the Research for Development (R4D) website is now fully integrated into DFID’s website, creating a one-stop shop for all information relating to the UK Government’s international development activities.

The Research for Development (R4D) portal, which contains information on all research funded by DFID, was initially established in 2006 and managed by CABI.

Although the website was already proving successful in the dissemination of research, this upgrade will take that further, with research searchable not only by a simple keyword but also by country or region, by theme, by research contacts, or by advanced boolean search.

CABI has decades of experience in providing users with clearly organized, accessible data and has applied this to the new site. Martin Parr, who leads the team working on the project, explained: “This upgrade has created a much more modern, exciting interface for R4D” adding that, with this project, “CABI is helping to open up access to research and provide DFID with a means to quantify and qualify the research that it funds”.
