Elsevier In Advanced Talks To Buy Mendeley For Around $100M

The world of ed-tech is ramping up another notch, and getting a lot more open in the process: educational publishing giant Elsevieris in advanced talks to buy Mendeley, a London/New York-based provider of a platform for academics to share research and collaborate with each other via a social network. TechCrunch understands from sources close to the companies that the deal is underway and should close this quarter, possibly by the end of February — all things being equal — and will be in the region of $100 million. The news comes at a pretty busy time for Mendeley: it has also closed a recent round of funding — value undisclosed but thought to be under $10 million — with investors including Access IndustriesPassion CapitalTom Glocer(Ex-CEO Thomson Reuters), and UK-based Andurance Ventures.

Prior to today, the company had only publicly disclosed a raise of $2 million from Passion’s Stefan Glaenzer, Alex Zubillaga and Ambient Sound Investments.

Elsevier was contacted for comment and a spokesperson had this to say:

“Elsevier often looks at acquiring companies that could improve our customer offering and add value.  Some we end up acquiring, most we do not. In all cases, as I’m sure you understand it’s never good to address speculative questions, regardless if they’re on target or not, and we’ll take the same approach here.”

Mendeley, meanwhile, did not confirm nor deny the news: “We don’t comment on rumors,” Mendeley’s CEO and co-founder Victor Henning told TechCrunch.

TechCrunch also understands that there had been others approaching Mendeley, including Thompson Reuters and Nature Publishing, a division of Macmillan, owned by Holtzbrinck Publishing Group — “effectively, the other big players in the world that Mendeley is disrupting,” said TC’s source.

New Study: Over 6.7million Students Learning Online

The 2012 Survey of Online Learning conducted by the Babson Survey Research Group reveals the number of students taking at least one online course has now surpassed 6.7 million. Higher education adoption of Massive Open Online Courses remains low, with most institutions still on the sidelines.

“The rate of growth in online enrollments remains extremely robust, even as overall higher education enrolments have shown a decline,” said study co-author Jeff Seaman, Co-Director of the Babson Survey Research Group. “Institutional opinions on MOOCs are mixed,” added co-author I. Elaine Allen. “Some praise them for their ability to learn about online pedagogy and attract new students, but concerns remain about whether they are a sustainable method for offering courses.”

Todd Hitchcock, Senior Vice President of Online Solutions, Pearson Learning Solutions, stated, “Learning is no longer limited to four walls – learning can happen anywhere – and it already is happening everywhere, everyday. The growth of online learning underscores this need for quality, flexible education programs that meet the demands of our 21st-century workforce.”
Frank Mayadas, Senior Advisor to the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and founding President of the Sloan Consortium noted “As in past years, the survey demonstrates the continuing robust growth in a wide range of institutions. It underscores the importance of online learning in higher education in the U.S. What a remarkable ten year period the survey has captured.”

Key report findings include:

  • Over 6.7 million students were taking at least one online course during the fall 2011 term, an increase of 570,000 students over the previous year.
  • Thirty-two percent of higher education students now take at least one course online.
  • Only 2.6 percent of higher education institutions currently have a MOOC (Massive Open Online Course), another 9.4 percent report MOOCs are in the planning stages.
  • Academic leaders remain unconvinced that MOOCs represent a sustainable method for offering online courses, but do believe they provide an important means for institutions to learn about online pedagogy.
  • Seventy-seven percent of academic leaders rate the learning outcomes in online education as the same or superior to those in face-to-face classes.
  • The proportion of chief academic officers who believe their faculty accept the value and legitimacy of online education has not increased – it now stands at only 30.2 percent.
  • The proportion of chief academic leaders who say online learning is critical to their long-term strategy is at a new high of 69.1 percent.
  • The perception of a majority of chief academic officers at all types of institutions is lower retention rates for online courses remain a barrier to the growth of online instruction.

The tenth annual survey, a collaborative effort between the Babson Survey Research Group and the College Board, is the leading barometer of online learning in the United States. Based on responses from over 2,800 academic leaders, the complete survey report, “Changing Course: Ten Years of Tracking Online Education in the United States” is available at
http://sloanconsortium.org/publications/survey/changing_course_2012

Previously underwritten by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the report has been able to remain independent through the generous support of Pearson and the Sloan Consortium.

Naturwissenschaften – The Science of Nature celebrates 100 years

STM publisher Springer has announced that its flagship multidisciplinary science journal Naturwissenschaften – The Science of Nature is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2013. The journal was founded in 1913 by the physicist Dr. Arnold Berliner. Originally published in German, the journal now publishes exclusively in English.

In 1912, Arnold Berliner proposed a journal to Springer that would cover the entire field of the natural sciences. His plan was to “inform everyone working in the natural sciences of what interests him outside his own subject.” The first issue appeared in January 1913.

Naturwissenschaften – The Science of Nature covers all aspects of the natural sciences, focusing on articles in biology, chemistry, geology and physics. Published monthly, the journal is dedicated to the fast publication of high-quality, peer-reviewed research. Reviews, Original Articles, Concepts & Synthesis, Short Communications, and Comments & Replies are published in Naturwissenschaften on link.springer.com as Online First articles before appearing in print.

Dr. Sven Thatje of the University of Southampton’s Department of Ocean and Earth Science at the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, UK, servers as the Editor-in-chief of the journal.

For the 100th anniversary, the Arnold Berliner Award will be established in recognition of its founder. The award will be given annually for the best research article published in Naturwissenschaften during the previous calendar year.

EBSCO Publishing and Ingram Collaborate to Make eBooks on EBSCOhost® Available via OASIS® Library Platform

EBSCO Publishing and Ingram today announced an agreement aimed at benefitting mutual customers of Ingram’s OASIS® (Online Acquisitions and Selection Information System) and eBooks on EBSCOhost®. The agreement will allow libraries to order eBooks on EBSCOhost through OASIS.

EBSCO is the first outside e-book provider to be incorporated into OASIS. “As libraries develop programs to meet the changing needs of their patrons, Ingram is uniquely positioned to help content reach its destination, regardless of whether that destination is the printed page or a digital device,” said Dan Sheehan, Vice President and General Manager, Ingram Content Group library services. “Through our work with EBSCO, OASIS users will have access to an expanded selection of digital content, and, the added flexibility to acquire materials that they and their patrons require from one comprehensive source.”

EBSCO’s extensive collection of e-book titles on EBSCOhost allows for a comprehensive and powerful search experience—with every search, relevant e-book titles appear directly alongside other EBSCO databases, exposing users to the full depth of a library’s offerings and increasing usage and visibility of the library’s entire collection. EBSCO offers more than 350,000 high-quality e-book titles from leading publishers. Collections may be built from a growing selection of best-selling, frontlist and award-winning e-book titles across a wide range of subject matter or chosen from EBSCO’s pre-packaged collections that are hand-selected by EBSCO’s Collection Development team.

ACCUCOMS launches user interaction program for Elsevier

ACCUCOMS will train Elsevier users in Turkey as part of a newly launched user interaction program. The user interaction program trains researchers and librarians in the use of Elsevier’s scholarly tools and solutions, such as ScienceDirect and Scopus.

In 2013, ACCUCOMS will organize user training sessions on behalf of Elsevier at more than a hundred libraries and universities in Turkey as a continuation of Elsevier’s training support for universities over the past years. Training sessions will show researchers how Elsevier’s various tools and solutions can benefit them and their research or studies.

“Since we believe that training existing customers will increase loyalty and advocacy for our products, face-to-face trainings for our end-users take precedence over other services,” said Gamze Keskin, Customer Development Manager at Elsevier. “We are very happy to be cooperating with ACCUCOMS to create further awareness about Elsevier products and services within the research and library community, train end-users and stimulate usage. Our main ambition is to maintain the most efficient and effective user experience to ensure that the contribution of our solutions is beyond expectation and creates value for research workflows.”

“The need for effective user training sessions became apparent to us through our sales and marketing activities for publishers,” said Pinar Erzin, Managing Director at ACCUCOMS. “Trainings will be conducted by dedicated trainers for the scientific community, who will also be trained by Elsevier specialists. They will follow the original business workflows in order to achieve the most efficient results. We are very excited about this first user interaction program for Elsevier.”
