AAAS / Science Renews Long-Standing Relationship with HighWire

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) announced its decision to renew their relationship to their long-standing ePublishing partner, HighWire Press.

AAAS’s reputation as a pioneer in scientific publishing comes from more than 150 years of a mission-driven goal to advance science and serve society. Since 1995, as one of HighWire’s first society partners, and now into the future, the two organizations will continue to share a collegial and collaborative working relationship, exploring new ways to innovate in the scientific marketplace.

Stewart Wills, Science‘s Editorial Director, Web and New Media, said of the decision: “HighWire’s roadmap for the future dovetailed nicely with our own plans for developing our Web sites and other information products, and afforded us an opportunity to actively participate in that development on the Drupal platform, which AAAS is using for a number of efforts. This was an important factor in our decision, as it will allow for tighter integration across our sites and for more experimentation and responsiveness around the needs of our own users, while still taking advantage of the community-based strengths of HighWire’s platform.”

AAAS has long been a distinguished source of content for their members and the scientific communities they serve. Over the years of working with HighWire, AAAS has created a series of connected digital assets, from the prestigious and multi-media content of Science, to experimenting with topical Knowledge Environments, to reaching new users with leading research news and career sources.

“AAAS is a recognized authority in the STM world, truly a scholarly market leader,” said Tom Rump, HighWire’s Managing Director. “Science‘s editorial excellence, combined with the HighWire Open Platform which leverages Drupal co-development services, will create exciting new publishing and technology solutions.”

Australia’s Macquarie University selects Ex Libris’ Alma library management solution

Ex Libris® Group, a world leader in the provision of library automation solutions, is pleased to announce that Macquarie University has selected the Alma library management solution. By adding Alma to the Primo® discovery and delivery solution, which the Macquarie community uses for searching the university library’s local and global collections, Macquarie offers staff members and researchers a single environment for resource management and discovery. This environment provides seamless access to library resources as well as a range of new services. Macquarie joins over 120 other institutions worldwide that have chosen to take advantage of the tight integration between Alma and Primo for the management and discovery of all resource types and collections.

JoAnne Sparks, university librarian at Macquarie University, commented: “As students and academics move from accessing their content in the print world to mostly electronic offerings, there is a growing gap between the functionality required for managing, exposing, and enabling the discovery of electronic resources and the functionality of the traditional, print-oriented library catalog and related back-office software. We were seeking a next-generation library system that would manage our increasingly electronic collections more effectively and would integrate seamlessly with our Primo discovery system. A key requirement was the ability of the new system to integrate with our automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS), which provides access to 80% of the library’s print collection. Alma is the only solution on the market that meets this requirement.

“Through Alma, we can consolidate the management of electronic, print, and digital collections,” continued Ms. Sparks. “The solution’s tight integration with Primo enables us to meet the needs of our clients, who can now access library services such as reservations and loans via a single interface. Our staff members are excited by the opportunities that the Alma Analytics module affords us for evaluating our resources and collections—thus introducing a strong future focus into our collection development efforts. With our move to Alma, we look forward to continuing our long partnership with Ex Libris and the Ex Libris user community.”

Holley Dumble, Ex Libris director of sales for Australia and New Zealand, remarked: “The trend of moving solutions to the cloud demonstrates academic libraries’ enthusiasm for collaborating on a global scale and providing their institution with tangible benefits, such as lower costs, higher productivity, and an enhanced discovery experience. We are delighted that Macquarie University has become the first new Alma site in 2013, joining the active customer community that has sprung up around the cloud-based Alma solution, particularly in Australia.”

BMJ builds new relationships with India’s medical professionals

This week, the BMJ – one of the world’s leading medical journals – takes to the road to talk to senior health professionals and political leaders across India.

Starting in Delhi, BMJ editors and senior personnel will be joined by representatives from the British High Commission in a series of roadshows to help support government plans for universal health coverage throughout India.

To succeed in its ambitious plans, India needs its doctors to be able to readily access the most reliable and up-to-date evidence and guidance. With the BMJ’s global reputation as a leading provider of trusted evidence-based support for doctors, researchers and patients, it is ideally placed to help, through its journals, its online learning service, and its decision-support tools.

The roadshows will showcase BMJ India – a dedicated edition of bmj.com to help doctors in India find medical news, comment, research, and education that is directly relevant to them.

BMJ’s first India Editor, Dr Anita Jain, will oversee the content of bmj.com/India and says she is confident that doctors will find it both informative and inspiring.

She explains: “This tailor-made offering includes all of the BMJ’s internationally acclaimed content, along with a rich mix of high quality research and commentary on Indian medicine and healthcare, designed to help doctors practice the best possible medicine and ensure the best possible outcomes for their patients.”

For example, recent content includes an article by Kounteya Sinha, Health Editor at the Times of India, suggesting that “mass economic migration is the greatest threat to India’s HIV control programme” and asks how this can be tackled? And a feature by Dr Soumyadeep Bhaumik from Kolkata argues that India has the worst snakebite problem in the world, especially among poor people and children from rural communities, yet treatment and the training of doctors in India are lacking.

From Delhi, the BMJ will travel with Deputy High Commissioner Sanjay Wadvani to Kolkata on 5 February, then onto Chennai with Deputy High Commissioner Mike Nithavrianakis on 6 February.

The final roadshow will take place on 7 February in Mumbai with Deputy High Commissioner Peter Beckingham, followed by the official launch of bmj.com/India.

BMJ Editor in Chief, Dr Fiona Godlee says: “The BMJ aims to improve health and make a real difference to clinical practice worldwide. We are delighted to be supporting India’s ambition to become a world leader in medical training and research, by providing an outlet for the work and opinions of India’s doctors. We want to work with Indian states and institutions to provide the widest possible access to our content.”

Tim Brooks, CEO of the BMJ Group added: “It is an honour to be a part of this historic transformation of India’s health system. Our team here in India, and colleagues in the UK, look forward to a long and positive relationship with both the government, and doctors across India.”

LWW launches iPad app for Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins (LWW), part of Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading global provider of information and point-of-care solutions for the healthcare industry, today announced the launch of an iPad® app for Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills, the premier web-based procedures reference product used by hospitals and institutions. The new app augments a facility’s existing Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills database by offering immediate access to all of its content—including custom content—without the need to always have an Internet connection. This newly created, un-tethered access also lends itself well to disaster recovery and home healthcare applications.

For example, when Hurricane Sandy pounded the East Coast last October it became readily apparent to millions just how helpless we become when cell phones are out and the Internet is down. Although this new app was not designed specifically for hurricane preparedness, it does make it possible for existing Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills customers to gain access to their custom databases, even when no Internet connection is available.

Available immediately as a free iTunes® download, the new app is only accessible to authorized users from institutions that currently subscribe to the online database. Upon entering a valid user name and password, the app downloads the user’s facility-specific version of the database complete with all customized procedures as well as any critical notes that may have been added.

“Customers love the fast, online access we provide to their nursing procedures but they also want something in place when their devices do not have access to the Internet,” said Carolyn Dalton, Senior Digital Product Manager, Wolters Kluwer Health, Professional & Education. “The beauty of this app is the offline capability, which allows them to always have their facility-specific procedures accessible to their staff, and protects their access in disaster recovery and remote-use situations.”

In addition to disaster recovery, home health care is another key area where the self-contained app provides benefit. Many community health nurses are travelling daily to places where they lack any form of Internet access. The app allows these health workers to have the same capabilities and access to the same information that all staff is looking at regardless of whether they are online or off.

Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills, part of Lippincott’s Nursing Solutions family of products, gives nurses accurate, step-by-step guidance for over 1,300 evidence-based procedures. Most procedures are accompanied by video clips and/or high-quality visuals that aid in understanding. The online resource provides skills checklists and competency tests for each procedure to help facilities verify staff competence. Each procedure undergoes a thorough annual review process to ensure the most up-to-date clinical information is provided. Facilities can customize and add procedures to meet their specific needs.

The new Lippincott’s Nursing Procedures and Skills app for iPad and iPad Mini is available immediately to existing institutional users via a free iTunes download. To learn more, visit www.LippincottSolutions.com/LNPS, or call (855) 695-5070.
