Thomson Reuters Collaborates with Australian National Data Service to Raise the Profile of Research Data

The Intellectual Property & Science business of Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading source of intelligent information for businesses and professionals, today announced a collaboration with Australian National Data Service (ANDS) to aid in the discovery of global data sets. The collaboration connects researchers to data repositories through the Data Citation IndexSM, a single-point solution providing access to quality research data sets from multi-disciplinary repositories around the world.

ANDS is one of a growing number of institutions included in the Thomson Reuters Data Citation Index. The collaboration ensures that Australian research is discoverable, properly attributed and reusable by other researchers. The influx of data from Australia also provides a wealth of new content that can be cited and furthered by researchers around the world.

“Research data is increasingly seen as a valuable output of research, but current publication and acknowledgement systems don’t cope well with this new paradigm,” said Adrian Burton, director of Services for ANDS. “The Thomson Reuters Data Citation Index brings research data to the heart of global scholarly information systems, and as data citation use grows, the Data Citation Index is well placed to track its impact and further use. We are excited about the collaboration with Thomson Reuters and the transformative role services like this can play in the era of data citation and data intensive research.”

Since creating the Data Citation Index, Thomson Reuters has worked closely with global industry leaders to capture bibliographic records and cited references for digital research, promoting the accurate identification, attribution and measurement of this growing body of scholarship. The Data Citation Index allows users to gain a comprehensive view of the genesis of research projects and influence the future paths they may take, while minimizing the duplication of work and speeding the scientific research process. Through linked content and summary information, this data is displayed within the broader context of the scholarly research ecosystem, enabling users to gain perspective that otherwise would be lost if viewed in isolation.

“Global scientific and scholarly research output is accelerating,” said Gordon Macomber, managing director, Thomson Reuters Scholarly and Scientific Research business.  “We are pleased to work with the Australian National Data Service to provide researchers with a view into Australia’s significant research output. ANDS’ support of the Data Citation Index is further testimony of how critical it is to identify prior research to enhance the scientific process.”

Currently, the Data Citation Index contains approximately 3.5 million data records from nearly 130 repositories. Learn more about the Data Citation Index.

JUSP welcomes Springer adoption of COUNTER Release 4 to improve journal usage data

The JUSP (Journal Usage Statistics Portal) welcomes the adoption of Release 4 of the COUNTER standard by international publisher Springer Science+Business Media.

The implementation ensures that the journal usage data Springer is providing to higher education libraries are now compliant with the standard, ensuring comparable, standard-based measurement.

The COUNTER Code of Practice for e-Resources provides an agreed international set of standards and protocols governing the recording and exchange of online usage data. Springer is the first of the 59 JUSP participating publishers to implement the new Release 4 standard, setting a precedent for other publishers to follow suit by 31 December 2013. This will ensure that data provided by JUSP continues to be of the highest quality.

JUSP, funded by Jisc, is the first system of its kind internationally that automates the process of gathering journal usage data from publishers and provides a single point of access to this data for higher education libraries.

The COUNTER standard forms the basis of JUSP, enabling access to consistent and comparable journal usage statistics. Graham Stone, information resources manager at the University of Huddersfield says:

“We see COUNTER as essential in helping us to understand usage of our resources in order to show value for money in times of increased pressure on library budgets. The better the information we have at our fingertips, the more informed our decisions will be. We strongly encourage all publishers and intermediaries to adopt this latest standard.”

Jo Lambert, JUSP project manager, said:

“The COUNTER standard is integral to JUSP, facilitating delivery of an efficient and cost-effective service. Release 4 of the standard provides a number of new features and opportunities; for instance, the new Journal Report 1 GOA provides usage data on gold open access articles. Working with Springer and our knowledgeable and committed user community will enable us to explore the potential for this new report and reflect their ideas and feedback within the JUSP portal. We applaud Springer for adopting this latest standard and encourage other publishers to follow suit.”

Rone Robbetze, vice president, sales at Springer Science+Business Media, says:

“Giving libraries access to usage data in this way will allow librarians to assess value for money in journal agreements. Springer believes that in implementing the COUNTER standard, we are supporting JUSP to help provide a crucial service for higher education libraries.”

The benefits of JUSP include immediate access to data that is verified to be COUNTER compliant, and access to the system provides economies of scale to save institutions time and money, enabling organisations to concentrate on the important task of data analysis rather than data collation. A shared approach also ensures a better quality of data than was previously achievable. Lastly, the automated usage statistics portal helps libraries to assess the value for money they are deriving from participating in NESLi2 journal agreements and other licence agreements with scholarly publishers.

Thomson Reuters and NuMedii launch new initiative to identify drugs for repurposing

The IP & Science business of Thomson Reuters, the world’s leading provider of intelligent information for businesses and professionals, today announced a strategic initiative with NuMedii, a biotech company dedicated to revolutionizing drug discovery, to identify new treatments for areas of unmet medical need. The partnership, which pairs NuMedii’s technology with the authoritative, hand-curated drug and disease information and systems biology expertise of Thomson Reuters, will create an unprecedented repository of content and methodologies to systematically identify new applications for existing drug compounds.

NuMedii will use Thomson Reuters MetaCore and Integrity content, as well as Thomson Reuters Life Sciences Professional Services expertise in systems biology, in conjunction with its unique Big Data technology and databases, to find FDA-approved drugs or discontinued development compounds that are appropriate for repurposing. The companies will leverage this comprehensive collection of high-quality data, knowledge and predictive technologies to identify therapeutic candidates with the greatest probability for clinical success, in turn fulfilling NuMedii’s mission to discover and de-risk drugs that target new pathologies.

“NuMedii is blending various innovative technologies and life science data to create a next generation drug discovery and development engine,” said Gini Deshpande, Ph.D., founder and chief executive officer of NuMedii. “This unique partnership allows NuMedii access to an unparalleled source of knowledge from Thomson Reuters, enabling us to turbo-charge our search and discovery of new applications for existing therapies.”

NuMedii’s Big Data technology uses machine learning, pattern matching, and network biology algorithms to find new indications for existing drugs. Three publications by researchers at Stanford University have already shown the promise of NuMedii’s approach. In each case, researchers demonstrated novel activity for existing drugs in preclinical experiments as predicted by NuMedii’s technology. Most recently, researchers showed that certain antidepressants identified with NuMedii’s technology have activity in experimental models of small cell lung cancer. The alcohol rehab healing place can help people get out of addiction problems and anxiety.

After white sands naples finds the novel treatment which needs to be identified and validated in appropriate preclinical models, NuMedii will optimize the formulation and administration of the drug for the new use and advance the program to early clinical development. In most cases, NuMedii expects to leverage the expedited 505(b)(2) regulatory pathway in the United States for drugs previously approved by the FDA. NuMedii ultimately looks to license the drug to specialty pharmaceutical companies, as it has done with Aptalis Pharma. In its work with Thomson Reuters, NuMedii will own and be responsible for any resulting drug development programs.

“Our collaboration with NuMedii is an opportunity to combine the leading information sources available with novel analytics, data integration and biomedical expertise in a way that has not been done before outside of a laboratory environment,” said Joe Donahue, senior vice president, Thomson Reuters Life Sciences. “We are excited to be working closely with NuMedii to utilize this approach to speed the discovery of new drug candidates.”
